Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone has an officially sanctioned colour list for Australian roadsigns.

Looking for PANTONE, CMYK or RGB format. Thanks!

Is that non-standard green "Freeway Green"? :)

Aaaand... what about orange signs, and the occasional fluorescent signs?

It must be my monitor because those colours don't look like what we see on the road, particularly the brown.

In the Swan Valley in WA there's some weird brown signs (across the whole valley - installed as part of the same scheme) that look kinda like maroon!

The older brown signs - the last of the painted ones - tend to fade towards Orange as well...

Interesting, I've not seen that in the standards before. I also don't think I've seen it used elsewhere in the state either, although my memory of winery signage around Margaret River is not good.

It still wouldn't surprise me if it is a mass-produced error.

I think it's a WA thing, although there's a couple of wineries locally on the Princes Hwy that also have burgundy signs, also in MUTCD fonts.

Have attached a colour chart I spent most of tonight fiddling with. The Australian green and brown Pantone colours are extracted from a VicRoads MUTCD PDF. The bottom 293/109 is numbers listed for tourist information "i" signs in the QLD MUTCD

You guys are forgetting - those are Pantone colours. No matter what you do, it's never going to look right on a computer monitor - monitors deal with RGB additive colours, but Pantone is in the RYB subtractive colour space, and designed only for printed materials like fabrics and paper based packaging.

I thought Pantone was Pantone -- a Pantone colour is not itself
specified by anything other than its Pantone number (or it may be
specified by hexachrome, somewhere). Which in turn leaves the
processor to map it into an RGB or CMYK colour as required.

Anyway, because signage is not produced in process colour, the Pantone
spots may persist successfully through CAD. But the actual colour may
then end up varying at the sign manufacturer.

Which incidentally may explain why the are several shades of mderns
relective signs in NSW that are all mean to be "green" ...

I'll admit I know nothing about colours on the computer, paint, vinyl etc.

However, sign designs that go out to manufacturers clearly state the colour, e.g. "Class 1 retroreflective white legend" or "class 1 standard green" so surely there is some standard that specifies what this is meant to be?

AS1906.1

IIRC, 1906.1 specifies the acceptable colour range that
retroreflective colours can have, based on reflective properties of
the material (something like that).

Not sure about orange.

When it comes to retroreflective and fluorescent colours, there's a
number of guidelines which deal with an 'acceptable colour range' that
the sign materials need to have.
