Hi all, just wanted to get some thoughts on this topic. Parking laws in Victoria state (among other restrictions) that it is prohibited to stop or park within 10 meters of an unsignalised intersection, unless a sign specifically permits it. Not many people seem to be aware of this default rule (nor others), which means that around my area, there are many, many cars parked within 10 meters of intersections, creating a visibility and safety hazard. It’s getting out of hand.

City parking enforcers are not going into random side streets to ticket offenders. Snap Send Solve does not seem to really do anything either.

Last year, I was in the US, and they have a color-coded system for the kerb that accompanies, or in some cases, replaces, parking signs. A red kerb always means “no stopping”, blue means accessible, yellow is a commercial loading zone, white is a pickup/dropoff zone. There were some others.

I know that my city will not be inclined to install hundreds of No Stopping signs on every single residential street. But I was thinking that perhaps a more cost-effective way to deal with this issue could be painting the kerb red as a visual reminder that parking is prohibited.
Any thoughts on this issue, or any other potential solutions? I’d like to come up with something to take to my city council at some point. Myself and other residents have had this concern for awhile but looking for a way to actually make a change.

The Australian equivalent is the solid yellow line which means No Stopping. This is already used in various jurisdictions and incorporated in the road rules of each state and territory, so would be a simple out-of-the-box solution to this issue that Councils and/or DTP could implement immediately.

That’s very true, thanks for the reply!

I forgot about the yellow line. I rarely see them as they’re not common in Vic. The exception is either side of school crossings, but people always seem to park over those when they’re not otherwise signposted. Really, it all boils down to a lack of drivers ed on things like this.
