Hi Guys,

I got a little bored and decided to pick an easy target for some sign redesign in the ACT. My designs are based on the 2007 RTA design guidelines.

Would be interested in your thoughts. Location: http://goo.gl/maps/BzLEL

The upper panel would look much better if you placed the airport symbol next to the road name/focal point like a route number, then the arrow next to it. Looks very cramped at the moment.

'To M23 FEDERAL HWY' really stretches the sign but the old way to get around that would be to place it on two lines in a separate panel below. Wouldn't mind seeing how that looks.

Hey Sam,

I took your advice on board and came up with this:

That looks a lot better, I think, I would suggest a minor tweak to line up the two right-pointing arrows and also the reduce the space between road name and airport symbol by a little bit (it just looks a tiny bit too much - will help reduce the sign width). Thoughts from others?

I like it, good job. I wonder if the ACT will decide to use the border around the route number or not?

Good work.  I much prefer the second version - I think having the arrow vertically centre justified in the panel look better, if space permits.  I have a heap of canberra mock ups I did a few years ago - i'll try and dig them up

Nice one. Even the first one's heaps better than the usually crappy ACT signs. Agree with Sam, the first thing I noticed is a bit of a gap between the road name and the airport sign. For some reason, me thinks that the signs will not look as this good in the future, after seeing so many stuff ups recently.

In regards to the border around the alphanumerics, I wish they don't have it. I started to dislike the NSW version after seeing it around so many times now and then when I go to VIC or QLD, they sort of sit in better, when initially I preferred the NSW ones.

I prefer the borderless MAB numbering as well. Am glad you're enjoying the pix. I am considering doing up a small portfolio of them for possible future use in job hunting :)

Are you willing to fix every SEQ sign? :)

Nice mockup - nice and clean.

One suggestion though is about the use of the 45 degree arrow for the
through direction - it makes it look like that there is some sort of
turn off at the intersection in order to continue to the City. To
remove this ambiguity, Victoria uses a curved arrow to indicate the
through movement when it is on a bend.

Paul, if you are serious about it, you need to learn to draw them in CAD as this is what all direction signs are designed in (I am including TrasiCAD in this).

I can give that a go :) Trasicad is what I would like to learn but it's a shit of a thing when you don't have the AS fonts and a license to run it
