I was just thinking about how since the Gympie Bypass opened, SR15, SR49, and SR51 have all terminated at an unnumbered road (Old Bruce Hwy).  Maybe SR15 could be decommissioned, SR49 could follow Old Bruce Hwy up to the Curra interchange, and SR51 could be extended via Old Bruce Hwy, Channon St, Horseshoe Bend, Stewart Tce, Bath Tce, Wolvi Rd, Gympie Connection Rd, then along the route of SR15.
From Dean.

Given how bad QLD is at numbering consistency in general, it doesn’t surprise me to still see A1 on the old route. Should have been given a route number, either state or alphanumeric (or the dreaded ALT 1 wildcard even!)

I actually quite like that they've kept A1 on the old route, considering it's still a major town, and that you have M1 on the bypass. But knowin us, that's probably because they've been too lazy to remove the old signs. Agreed on that it really should just be given a 'proper' route number.

This is an on-going issue for several QLD routes. But I am surprised that this wasn't resolved in the same way as Toowoomba Bypass and Toowoomba Connection Road was. It just shows how each regional office seems to operate differently from each other, rather than some decisions such as route numbering, being made at head office. It also explains why there's so many duplicated route numbers in QLD too.

Route numbers are not meant to be duplicated in general, let alone in the alphanumeric system. In the old days the old route might have received an ALT-NR1 when NR1 was relocated, but that's as close as it would ever get generally. The preferred method is to use a number that incorporates the old route number (such as C801 in Vic, when the main highway route was relocated onto new work), or to have an entirely new number.
