Hi guys,

A quick update from WA.

The new access from Tonkin Highway to Dunreath Drive has opened - see my previous post
http://groups.google.com/group/aussie-highways/browse_thread/thread/7c14e5a38f72ef02#

The new access is located just north of Hardy Road. The new signs aren't too bad. Here's a few photos:

Dunreath Drive northbound - turn right to keep going on Dunreath Drive. Don't like this sign at all but probably not inconsistent with the guidelines.

New ID with Tonkin Hwy in the background. They made sure you can't turn left (not sure why, not like it would make the intersection operate any worse)

New IDs - the pointy bits don't look quite right, otherwise perfectly fine

Looking back the other way

Southbound AD - again not too bad, although perhaps a little big

Okay, onto Roe Highway/GEH interchange at Midvale. Three new signs up since I was last out there. All reasonable designs.

New nb RD after Morrison Road. Meekatharra probably could've been included but not a big loss, I suppose.

New sb AD sign before Morrison Road. I wonder if they will need to add a supplementary plate saying 'AFTER MORRISON ROAD SIGNALS' or something.

Great big ID sign, carefully hidden behind the trees so that for anyone in the left lane it is 75% obscured. Hopefully they will cut the trees.

And finally here's a handpainted warning sign on Gt Eastern Hwy just east of Mundaring. I thought Paul might like it - you can clearly see the brushstrokes. Doesn't seem that old otherwise.

Cheers
Sam

Nice find with the waterbirds sign Sam. In the ACT, there's plenty of hand painted signs on Scotchlite reflective panels especially in the Tuggeranong area.

The new signs aren't too bad, but spacing is off on some of the IDs. The change is quality definitely points to a change in design software. I would suggest that what we are seeing is what we saw in NSW sometime ago when the RTA changed to Trasicad, designers trying to come to grips with a new way to design their signs. The thing I noticed with all the new signs is the shapes are different to what the older WA signs use, the radii on the corners seem to be inconsistent on the ID signs, same goes for the chevrons, they're all slightly different.
