G'day,

Spent a couple of days in Dampier/Karratha during the week and was able to grab a few roadgeeking photos. Lots of work going on, e.g. a brand new four-lane highway from Karratha to the Burrup Peninsula turnoff. When I fist visited a couple of years ago, there were no traffic signals at all, now there are 3 in service and 1 under construction at the moment.

Anyway, here's a few snaps from south to north:

Dampier Rd looking east from Madigan Rd on the western edge of Karratha (good to see the TD351 being included on most of the new signs, although it is a bit confusing where it goes at the Dampier end). The next intersection marks the eastern end of the recent duplication works.

Madigan Road northbound approaching Dampier Road. Madigan Road is the heavy vehicle route to/from Dampier, bypassing the Karratha urban area:

Madigan Road southbound. Love this sign, except Tom Price should be there instead of Nanutarra which is not signed at the jct with NWCH:

Dampier Road approaching Madigan Road:

Northbound between Karratha and the Airport:

Northbound at the Airport turnoff:

Southbound towards the Airport turnoff:

Looking south from the ridge north of the Airport (visible in the previous northbound photos) looking across the salt flats separating Dampier from Karratha:

Big signalised junction in the middle of nowhere - Burrup Peninsula turnoff. Unusual layout, presumably to avoid road trains having to merge into the right lane to turn right. Note that TD351 is shown as going straight ahead - the old signage showed it going right. There's no subsequent signs showing TD351 so who knows what happens to it.

Southbound approaching the Burrup turnoff:

AD sign on Burrup Peninsula Road about 1km after Dampier Road. Weird thing is that all these junctions on the sign are like 5km away - that's taking the concept of an Advance Direction sign to a new level!

Enjoy!

With http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/pilbara/IMG_5894.jpg, I presume the To NR1 would normally be at the top of the stack but to reduce the length og the sign, was put to the right? At first glance I read the line to the left of it and then kept reading the to NR1 which didn't make sense.

Nice pix Sam.

Really enjoyed these, not been to that part of WA before.

Some of them reminded me of scenes in California.

I also think these pix confirm that MRWA are using Trasicad now, as I suspected a while ago. The name patches on these signs and the undersized TD shields and the wonky RD sign layout are very reminiscent of what you see in QLD and the standard output of the software

These would've been designed by the contractor rather than MRWA in-house. I agree it does look a bit like a TraSiCAD output.

MRWA still uses their custom "SIGNS" program which only works with AutoCAD 11(?) and earlier versions for in-house designs. As this program is essentially useless now (it's not possible to get older versions of AutoCAD anymore, I don't think think...) they are switching to "GUIDSIGN" which is an American program. It has some Australian signs modelled on the AS1742/1743 sign examples but doesn't do MRWA-spec signs as yet, so it's not particularly useful. It also won't design a 3-digit tourist drive route marker (the numbers don't fit inside the shield) so that's rather frustrating.

Will be interesting to see how much the standard designs change when MRWA switches properly to GUIDSIGN as it seems like less effort to simple get rid of some MRWA-specific quirks than to have the program heavily modified.

Hey Sam,

I have tried using both Signs and Guidsign before, but had issues with both of them, not working particularly well, lots of crashing issues, but the latter is well used in the US for sign design. I prefer its output over Trasicad.
