Hume Motorway exit numbers

I was driving down to Canberra on the weekend and discovered that M31 Hume Motorway has numbered exits between the M7/M5 interchange and where it ends motorway status in Berrima. Honeslty, it seems really pointless.

- The numbering ends when the motorway grade ends (where the motorway joins the old highway and continues on as a Hume Highway dual carriageway with normal at-grade interchanges) giving only about 15 exits worth numbering
- If any new exits are built in the future they'd either have to replace all numbers or give the new exit a number like 4a, which is messy
- EXIT 1 southbound occurs on both M5 and M7, linking each motorway to the other, rather than EXit 1 being the first exit on the Hume Mwy itself (being brooks road)
- if for some reason they decide to add numbered exits to M7 and M5 in some sort of sydney orbital numbering scheme, it will clash with the hume numbering at the interchange, confusing everyone

What do you guys think? Good idea trying to copy QLD or nah?

I'd prefer distance (km based) exits like Qld. That way you can add new exits in between existing exits without cocking up the numbering, and also you can calculate the approximate distance between numbered exits, e.g. Exit 60 being 13km from exit Exit 73. Maybe the RMS could extend the numbering even further to cover all grade-separated exits on the Hume all the way to Albury, perhaps?

Agree.

Although the eventual exit numbering in both states will create a strange situation where you jump from Exit 550ish in South Albury to Exit 300ish in Wodonga. I'm sure this is common in the US

In the US there is a standard pattern for resetting the mileage count at state borders, starting at the southern or western border or terminus. One could argue that this is the idea behind numbering exits on the Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway with a starting point at the Queensland/New South Wales border. However I suspect the preferred method would be to use the capital as the datum point and numbering out from there.

That is true. In the US, exit numbers reset at state boundaries. However, for most rural freeways, I think the best approach is to number the exits as the distance(s) from the state capital, e.g. Sydney and Melbourne, since both have freeways radiating from their urban cores.

Pardon for necro'ing an old post, but adding a small wrinkle to the exit numbering saga in NSW, it seems the exit numbers have been removed from the Hume Motorway in the last week or two. Wonder why.

Brendan reported that exit numbers south of Narellan Rd had been removed in mid-Feb, so if the urban exit numbers are now gone too hopefully that means distance-based numbering will be installed in the near future...

Even weirder, they've installed exit numbering inside the Eastern Distributor. Southbound; " Exit 4" at the Anzac Pde/ Moore Park Rd exit
Northbound; "Exit 4" at the William St exit.

Funny you mention it, I noticed a sign with space for an exit number over the weekend. Not sure whether this has been installed in error or whether they're making room to further roll out the exit number system?

Those have been there for a couple of years now. Since late 2018 at least.

It looks like the M4 section of Westconnex has been designed to accommodate exit numbering based on those signs. Some of the fork diagram signs also have a "EXIT" in the bottom left corner, which is where the exit number coverplate will be placed.

Seems that at least a couple of exit signs have been installed at St Peters Interchange (based on the latest drive-through videos) with spots ready to add a number (if ever)

I was recently in the Hunter last week, and I felt the Hunter Expressway would do much better with exit numbering, but with distance-based numbering from the start of A15 in Newcastle CBD, somewhat like the exit numbering for SH 1 in the Auckland Region. Hypothetically, it would be strange to start at Exit 16 (Pac. Mwy interchange), though the following numbers (26, 30, 33, 44, 52, 56 (sebnd only) and 64) seem rather easy to remember as opposed to the road names that few usually remember. It would be nice if they were to implement this after the New England Highway upgrade to Golden Highway
