If you remembered and enjoyed voommaps.com (which hosted a scan of the 1934 Gregory's Sydney street directory) you would have been sad to see the site recently vanished for the second time.

However I did find that that those maps and more are available online at the State Library of NSW. Although while it's cool to have the complete books including ads and indexes, they aren't particularly easy to browse, especially if you want to compare maps from different time periods.

So I decided to make my own site to solve this problem: timetravels.au. This includes the scanned 1934, 1942 and 1954 directories, and allows you to switch years with a single click. You can also pan to adjacent maps without going back to the index, and you can even compare each map with a modern map from OpenStreetMap.

This was a weekend's work so still probably has some kinks. Let me know if you have feedback and I can try improving it over time. Also the 1954 maps have many missing pages, so if anyone has scans of the missing maps be sure to let me know!

Yet more historical maps now on www.timetravels.au:

For Melbourne I've added full scans of Morgan's street directory from 1936, 1942 and 1952.
For Canberra I've added a few government maps from 1936 through to 1971, showing the explosion of development thar happened during this period.

The site also makes it easy to compare the historic maps with current-day Google maps.

Enjoy!

Maps from the Brisbane Refidex directories in 1926 and 1949 have now been added too. These cover Brisbane as well as parts of the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Ipswich.
