Queensland’s Anti-Discrimination Review
In September 2024, the Miles Labor Government passed its Respect at Work and Other Matters Amendment Act into law. Its most contentious anti-discrimination provisions were due to commence in July 2025, but the incoming LNP Government paused full implementation after the ACL raised serious concerns with the Attorney-General’s office regarding the impact on churches, Christian schools, and employers that hold a Christian worldview.
The Respect at Work and Other Matters Amendment Act introduced a framework that directly threatened all Queensland employers who hold a Biblical view of the created distinctions between male and female, marriage, sexuality, and sexual morality.
The Queensland Government has now announced an independent review of the state’s human rights and anti-discrimination system. This review will analyse the Queensland Human Rights Commission, the Human Rights Act 2019, and the provisions of the Respect at Work and Other Matters Amendment Act 2024 that have not yet been implemented.
This review is an opportunity for Queensland to protect speech and religious expression. On September 30, the KC overseeing the review will release a discussion paper inviting submissions. The ACL will keep our Queensland supporters informed about how we can contribute.
