Advocate Role Summary:
Due to positive movement within our teams, we have an opening within our Choices LGBTIQA+ Behaviour Change Group Program for an Advocate.
Choices is an innovative pilot program as part of the Federal & State Government’s Innovative Perpetrator Responses commitment under the National Plan. The program is a 16-session group program for LGBTIQA+ people who have or are currently using violence toward a partner, or partners.
The Advocate will be responsible for contacting, offering and providing ongoing support (including risk assessment and safety planning) to victim-survivor partners or former partners (and their children and family members where needed) of people participating in the Choices Group Behaviour Change Program.
In this role you will use your knowledge of current theory and practice related to domestic and family violence, using a queer lens and trauma-informed approach to provide support to LGBTIQA+SB victim-survivors of domestic violence.
What we are looking for
- A lived experience of being part of the LGBTIQA+SB community (we welcome applications from transgender, non-binary, gender diverse and cisgender LGBTIQA+SB people for this role).
- A passion for the safety of LGBTIQA+SB victim-survivors & compassion for the needs of at-risk LGBTIQA+SB community members
- Relevant qualifications in psychology, criminology, social work, education and/or related experience within community care and wellbeing (paid or unpaid)
- Relevant professional experience in one or more of the following fields;
- Domestic, family or sexual violence (preferred)
- Human services, including mental health, alcohol and other drug services and gambling support
- Counselling
A demonstrated understanding of the following legislation and frameworks, or willingness to learn;
- the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 and Child Protection Act 1999 and Child Protection Reform Amendment Act 2017
- the domestic and family violence definitions and provisions in the Family Law Act 1975
- Domestic and family violence services practice principles, standards and guidance
- the Domestic and Family Violence Information Sharing Guidelines 2017 and Information Sharing Guidelines 2018
A demonstrated understanding of;
- the nuanced and intersectional understanding of the drivers, dynamics and impacts of domestic and family violence and the dynamics of gender, power and control
- recognition of the significance of patterns of perpetrator behaviour beyond individual incidents of violence and are able to meaningfully assess these patterns to develop appropriate responses for the victim
- gendered analysis of violence in their practice acknowledging that gender inequality is a predominant cause and consequence of domestic and family violence
- recognition of the complex ways in which children are harmed through experiencing violence, and the tactics of control and abuse of power that they experience
- the behavioural change process in relation to domestic and family violence, including knowledge of the structure and content discussed in perpetrator intervention group programs
- Observed a minimum of six perpetrator intervention group sessions (desirable, not essential)
Mandatory Requirements
- Willingness to obtain a police check from the Australian Federal Police (we will fund this for the successful applicant); relevant criminal history only.
- Provide details for two referees (minimum one professional, recent) to conduct a reference check (successful applicant only).
- Hold a Driver’s License (desirable, not essential)
- Comply with all law relating to the employment or engagement of Child Related Personal in relation to the Services, including all necessary Working with Children Checks however described.
