- Hours: Casual hours will be across the below:
- Thursday - 10:30am - 6:30pm
- Friday - 10:30am - 6:30pm
- Saturday- 9:30am - 5:30pm
- Remuneration: Casual Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award - Level 2.1 - $43.23 p/hour
- Location: Brunswick East
- Term: Casual Contract
- Checks: Employment is contingent on a satisfactory Working with Children Check and Police Check
About Transgender Victoria
Transgender Victoria is Victoria’s leading body for transgender, gender diverse and non-binary (TGD) people. We are trans-led, working for, by and with trans communities to achieve better social, economic and health outcomes. We represent TGD communities by fostering connection, advocating for change and supporting trans people to lead full and meaningful lives.
As part of TGV, you’ll be supporting the day-to-day operations of Affirmation Station, Naarm’s only trans-specific op shop and community hub - helping people access gender-affirming clothing, connection, and support.
Role Purpose
The Casual Shop Assistant & TGD Peer Worker supports the smooth running of daily retail operations at Affirmation Station while providing warm, identity-affirming, non-clinical peer support to community members. Complex matters can be escalated to the leadership team. You will receive supervision and guidance from the Shop Manager and the Operations Lead.
This role focuses on:
- Delivering friendly and inclusive customer service
- Sorting donations, preparing items for sale, and assisting with merchandising
- Supporting gender-affirming access to clothing, including through one-on-one appointments
- Facilitating binder and bra fittings
- Helping foster a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for TGD people
- Providing information about TGV services and offering cold referrals where appropriate
- Some travel to regional/rural locations for pop-up TGV Affirmation Stations.
About You
You will be someone who:

- Has lived experience as a trans or gender diverse person
- Brings a warm, welcoming, trauma-informed approach to peer work
- Feels comfortable supporting people who are new to their gender journey
- Is reliable, organised, and able to work independently and self directed when needed
- Can engage confidently with people with diverse lived experiences
- Has a strong understanding of the TGD sector and available referral pathways
- Demonstrates professionalism and clear workplace boundaries
- Is comfortable hearing about a person’s gender journey and offering resources or referral options
Key Responsibilities
Retail Support
- Provide friendly and affirming customer service
- Assist community members in accessing gender-affirming clothing including binders, bras, tucking undies and binding/tucking tape
- Sort donations, quality check items, steam garments, and organise racks
- Maintain tidy displays and merchandising
- Manage basic point-of-sale operations
- Support volunteers when applicable
- Complete light physical tasks such as lifting bags of donations, moving clothing racks, and being on your feet for parts of the shift
TGD Peer Support
- Offer warm, non-clinical peer support and connection
- Support community members and discuss options related to gender-affirming clothing
- Provide information about TGV programs, services, and referral pathways
- Foster a sense of belonging, safety, and pride within the space
- Uphold trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and identity-affirming practices
- Escalate conversations to leadership where needed
- Maintain confidentiality and boundaries (no counselling, case management, or clinical notes)
Safety, Access & Inclusion
- Support the physical and psychological safety of all visitors
- Follow TGV’s safety, risk, and emergency procedures
- Contribute to culturally safe and inclusive practice
Admin & Procedures
- Follow operational procedures as instructed
- Help maintain a clean, organised, and welcoming shop environment
- Complete basic admin tasks related to retail operations
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- Lived experience as a trans or gender diverse person.
- Experience working with LGBTQIA+ communities (paid or volunteer).
- Warm interpersonal skills, trauma-informed, and an understanding of how to contribute to safe(r) TGD spaces.
- Ability to maintain boundaries, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- A commitment to intersectional, anti-racist, anti-ableist and culturally safe practice.
- Current Working with Children Check.
Desirable
- Peer Support and/or mental health first aid training.
- Driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
- Experience engaging or coordinating volunteers
- Retail experience is welcome but not required - we will provide on-the-job training.
