What to Expect
- Jodo (Samurai Short Staff):
Learn
the art of the samurai’s short staff—a discipline blending movement,
focus, and tradition. Jodo techniques were developed to defend against
sword attacks, emphasizing timing, precision, and control. No experience
or equipment necessary; all are welcome to try this rare and
fascinating martial art. - Daito Ryu (Samurai Grappling):
Explore
the roots of Japanese jujutsu with Daito Ryu, an art famed for its
subtle joint locks, throws, and the principles that inspired modern
aikido. This session introduces the fundamentals of samurai
grappling—perfect for those curious about traditional self-defense and
the heritage of Japan’s warrior class.

About the Instructors
Our
seminar is led by experienced instructors in the direct lineage of
Otofuji Ichizo sensei, led by Tom Groendal sensei (7th dan, All Japan
Kendo Federation) of Hoshu Dojo. You’ll be learning authentic techniques passed down from generations of samurai martial artists.
