I have a copy of the BETA installer for Linux and it is attached to this email. Please have a look at it, test it and reply to this email with comments.

WARNING: This is BETA software, it will eat your hard-disk, kill a kitten and do other bad things, so DON'T run it in production and don't sell it to your children.

Seriously, this has been tested on a very limited number of machines and if you're going to test it and tell me that it works - or doesn't - you are expected to include full system version information. Also, I'm not the author of this software and I do not hold the copyright to this code, but have been given permission to share it, so, play nice.

That all being said, enjoy and let me know how you go.

Hello all

Have installed and tested (as far as log in and have a look around!) with FF 53.0.3 & Vivaldi 1.9.818.50 on 64 bit PCLinuxOS 2017 with kernel 4.10.16 and KDE Plasma 5.8.6  on an old HP Paviion dv6 (with a brand new drive!) with no issues.

Strangely, Chrome didn't seem to take the extension although I can see the files were installed.  I haven't had a chance yet to follow up why this might be happening.

Anyway, two out of three isn't too bad!

And I still have my fallback installation of FF51 on another PC which is still working well

Cheers

Successfully running on Linux Mint 18.1 with Firefox 54.0.

It was necessary to install some dependencies, namely; libjansson4 and shareutil. Shareutil required changing mirrors because it wasn't present in the local mirrors.

Many thanks for your work.

I have it working on Ubuntu 16.04LTS with Firefox 54

It did not work initially despite restarting Firefox a couple of times.  Then I remembered my setting of plugin.load_flash_only (see my earlier post at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/auskey/wsh8bpbUBS0/QjS3emzqAgAJ) so I reset that config value and after restarting Firefox it now works.

Note that resetting plugin.load_flash_only does not actually remove this config setting until you restart Firefox.  Resetting it simply converts it to a string type with no value then on restarting Firefox it is no longer there.

Cheers
Dan

Good job!

I first found out about this by looking at the Mac installer and saw your install script (referenced the linux binary).

Very nice way to get around the auth issues (lack of Java plugin support) by linking it to browser extensions. Impressed!

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to using this on Chrome.

Roland.

Hi Onno,
I have installed your installer.
It then appeared to install fine.
I look in Firefox and the AUSkey add-on is there and updated today. So far so good.
AUSkey still not found.
On my old machine (32bit) I was happily using ESR version of firefox. This is my new (64bit) machine. I can obviously get around it with ESR again (I guess) but I would rather move forward as that is the long term solution.

Here are my versions etc:
kernel.x86_64                     4.12.5-300.fc26
firefox.x86_64                      55.0.1-1.fc26

Any ideas?

Hi All,
Thanks for the advice but no joy.

Addons enabled.
AUSkey data is fine as it is still OK on my old 32bit machine using firefox.esr.

Ok What I have tried.
Request (using my 32 bit machine) for a new AUSkey.
On my 64bit machine the install (obviously) wants to load up a .exe (windows) or some sort of java script. Cannot do so install does not continue and so new key is not an option.

Install Firefox.esr (64 bit). Install still not an option (obviously) and the old key still does not work.

Call the TAX help desk. Not really helpful say you need to use 32bit (64bit will not work). They don't even know about this solution and also don't even know that there is expected to be a new AUSkey without java!!!!!
I tried (stupidly) to get the 32bit firefox.esr up no fun so I gave up.

At this point I am prepared to try anything someone reasonably suggests to that I get going and if it helps others then that is really good for everyone.
My solution will be my old notebook (32bit) which works is kept going just to make the tax office happy each moth until they give us an AUSkey (or some better way) to do this that works without DRAMA.
I am working so no one waste any time on this but if it worked for someone else with my confguration and there was some little trick I missed then I would love to know.

Here are my versions etc:
kernel.x86_64       4.12.5-300.fc26
firefox.x86_64       55.0.1-1.fc26

Thanks everyone Luigi

Hi Nick
I don't use Ubuntu but what I would do is extract the file - from memory it is called AUSkeyInstaller.sh or such - make sure it is executable via the file properties permissions, open a terminal in the same directory where the file is, and the enter ./AUSkeyInstaller.sh or whatever the file name is. No need to do so as root - if you do you may find that it doesnt work for your username as the files have been installed in root's home directory.
Sorry, not in front of the pc at the moment o/wise I could be more specific.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Hi,
Just got this working on Fedora 26, only problem was that fedora  doesn't have libssl.so.1.0.0 or libcrypto.so.1.0.0, had to symlink /usr/lib64/libssl.so.10 and libcrypto.so.10 to get it to work. tests ok under firefox 56. Haven't tried chrome yet.

Hi All,
I too did not have the lib's mentioned below.
I did the symlink as suggested and re-installed the beta version but still no joy.
Same main versions Fedora 26 and Firefox 56. I tried chrome also, all no joy.
It all starts fine but does not show any AUSkey entries.
I am sure I am just missing something simple.
Back to my old 32 bit machine for now it seams.
PS glad it works for you Peter.

I do not quite understand it.
Its Christmas so I thought I would try again.
Did the install. Same libs missing. Did the ln -s in /usr/lib64 as below
ln -s libssl.so.10 libssl.so.1.0.0
ln -s libcrypto.so.10 libcrypto.so.1.0.0
did the install again.
Presto all happy now.
firefox-57.0.1-1.fc26.src.rpm
will be upgrading from Fedora 26 to 27 at the end of the month I expect hopefully all still OK.

Have a happy festive season.

Bit of a niche case, but if anyone else out there is using NixOS I can confirm this does work with a bit of wrangling, I don't think there is enough demand to package it for NixOS, but you can get it working like so:

  1. Edit AUSkeyInstallerNix.sh to remove the ldconfig checks on like 20 and 21
  2. Run `nix-shell -p sharutils --run ./AUSkeyInstallerNix.sh`. The installer will fail, this is expected
  3. Run `nix repl '<nixpkgs/nixos>'`. In the repl, run `with pkgs; lib.makeLibraryPath [ openssl libxml2 jansson ]`, copy the result.
  4. Run `nix-shell -p patchelf`. In the shell, run `patchelf --set-interpreter "$(cat $NIX_CC/nix-support/dynamic-linker)" --set-rpath "<the path created in step 3> ~/.local/bin/AUSkey/abrakmbe`
  5. Run `~/local/bin/AUSkey/pstscript.sh`
  6. If using Chromium, you may need to install the AUSKey extension from the web store, using Firefox I had to move ~/.mozilla/extensions and ~/.mozilla/native-messaging-hosts into ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profilename>/
  7. keystore.xml goes in ~/.AUSkey
  8. Make sure you enable the extension in firefox, as it wont enable it automatically, it should show a notification.
So on the off chance anyone googles NixOS AUSkey, there you go.

I'm trying to run this on Ubuntu 18.10 and Chrome with no joy unfortunately.

I have run the script, installed the chrome extension, but when I click on the link to and start the install process, it simply says, you need to install a browser extension and takes me to the page for windows and mac.  Very sad. Looks as though I'll have to keep the mac around just for this which sucks badly.

Hi Peter,

Are you aware that you can use your myGov login for this now? I've been using myGov to log in and do my BAS for a couple of years now from memory and it all works seamlessly. I found the AusKey method used to work for about 6 months at a time and then an upgrade to something or other (the OS, the browser, Java, etc.) would break it.

I seem to recall that at some stage in the recent past, I had the option to choose between an AusKey login and the myGov login, with the latter being flagged as "in beta". I just tried today and I didn't seem to have any option. I usually log in via https://bp.ato.gov.au/ and today when I clicked the "login" link at the bottom of that page, I was sent straight to the myGov login prompt and from there to the Business Portal.

Maybe the AusKey method is no longer available anyway?

Seriously, this has been tested on a very limited number of machines and if you're going to test it and tell me that it works - or doesn't - you are expected to include full system version information. Also, I'm not the author of this software and I do not hold the copyright to this code, but have been given permission to share it, so, play nice.

That all being said, enjoy and let me know how you go.

It seems I needed my AUSkey for using FASDesktop, but I didn't need to install the new AUSkey software as it seems FASDesktop uses it directly.  Not sure if any other software plays that well with AUSkey.

But I figured I might as well setup the software anyway (been using myGov since I moved off Firefox ESR).  I've got it working on 32-bit debian stretch, and am happy to help others with 32-bit if they need it.  The main bit I needed was a 64-bit kernel (which I already had), multiarch (which I already had), and libjansson4:amd64 (only had i386).  Little surprised the 64-bit AUSkey software worked with 32-bit chromium, and even more surprised it works in firefox.

And I currently see one of my AUSkey's expired and the other is expiring soon.  Is there anyway to renew, or am I supposed to make new ones?

Hi Jayen
Off topic but I see you use FASDesktop.  I'm thinking of using it too for a micro business i have. Do you find it good?
Cheers

Slightly off topic, I just got sent this by the ATO/DPO

New Machine to Machine (M2M) Authentication Solution to replace AUSkey
......
AUSkey is scheduled for decommissioning by March 2020.

I am unsure if AUSkey completely goes away but I think maybe it is just for developers who use SBR.
I guess AUSkey will then be killed off everywhere over time.

Anyone have more info on this.

Hello.
Machine credential will be mostly a like for like replacement for a device AUSkey. If you used a user AUSkey in software, then you will need to use a machine credential instead.
It might be available in the first release in September 2019.
To get one you will need a mygovID and get authorised for your ABN in the relationship authorisation manager (RAM). You can do that part now, but only with an iPhone. Android version coming soon.
There will be an option in RAM to set up a machine credential.
If you are just using the portal login services, you won't need machine credential, just mygovID and the RAM authorisation.

Hi jubeman,

any idea when the Android version will be out? I tried to put my BAS in
last night to discover that my AUSkey had vanished (I suspect expired).
Was going to go with MYGov given I have to set something new up anyway,
but if there isn't an Android version then I'm out of luck there too.

How can there be SO much vendor lockin with this stuff.. Seriously?

Hi all,
From my experience AUSkey just silently expires, no warning and you are never told anywhere on the web site etc what the date is.
The AUSkey entry is just not there anymore one day.

If you look at the actual AUSkey/keystore.xml you will find these fields:
<notBefore>2019-07-13T06:23:50+10:00</notBefore>
<notAfter>2020-03-30T01:32:48+10:00</notAfter>
Guess what they are.
I made sure to renew (remake) my AUSkey before it expired but I guess we are not supposed to understand the AUSkey actual data files are we.

Since MyGov had security holes which I stumbled across I removed myself from MyGov entries and won't be using that so I have no idea what will happen if they say its the only way to have access.

Good luck everyone. I also agree with the comment about this being a not very good system etc.

Would you care to elaborate on that?

I saw more info here https://softwaredevelopers.ato.gov.au/myGovID

Replacement API https://softwaredevelopers.ato.gov.au/M2M seems the new mechanism replacing that. Cheers!

Hi Jubeman, Does it mean that it's always bound to a device? any thoughts. Looking for a way to implement this in Cloud environment.

Hi guys.
I'm not totally sure when the Android version will be out, but possibly by September 2019.

There will be more Comms about AUSkey ending and a migration option.

Note mygovID is different to mygov and is more secure, still using digital cert technology but via the mygovid app. Mygov for access to your individual info. Mygovid to access your businesses. RAM to authorise multiple businesses to your mygovid. Machine credentials like AUSkey will only work for one ABN each.

Using a cloud provider product is always an option if you don't want to install your own machine credential in installed software. Websites will use the new mygovid product.
