2012 junior championships update

There are now 20 entries, almost half from Victoria. For a bit of fun, the organizers this year are keeping track of which schools the kids are representing.

The competition has had several significant non-financial sponsorship offers from chess businesses which should help next year's competition run smoothly and be very rewarding for the players and parents. These include:
  • Chess Kids have donated 3 experienced arbiters for the championships.
  • Tornelo has offered a couple of ipads their management system for logging games for the bulletin (there also should be a couple of volunteers logging the top boards so parents can see the games semi-live on the Internet).
  • Leah's Den has donated 10 hand crafted boards and chess sets for non-financial prizes.

The following is an article on the World Junior U/20 Championships by Ian Rogers (from the Canberra Times).

The World Junior (Under 20) Championships have always been a tough ask for Australian representatives. At 18 or 19, most Australian players have just finished their most difficult school years and compete against players who have been playing professionally for 5 years or more. In the modern era, many teenagers have become Grandmasters and Magnus Carlsen managed to reach number one on the world rankings at a time when he was still eligible for the World Junior.

In 2011 Australian sent a record five juniors to Chennai, India, to test their skills against many of the world's best juniors in an event made trickier by the presence of dozens of underrated but expertly prepared local players.

Canberra's Junta Ikeda did manage to break out of the pack and, had he won his final game would have become the first Australian to finish in the top 20 for more than a decade. Ikeda needed enormous resilience just to reach his final score of 7/13, twice holding out higher ranked opponents in marathon games, one of which exceeded 150 moves. The high point for Ikeda came in his eleventh round defeat of Peruvian Grandmaster Jorge Cori.

Canberra also had Australia's top scorer in the girls division, with 16-year-old Emma Guo not overawed by her older opponents.

Australian Scores:
Open
  Ikeda 7/13
  Ly 6.5
  Zulfic 4
Girls
  Guo 5.5
  Narenthran 4
