World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad

Australia is sending 3 teams to the World Youth U16 Chess Olympaid in Istanbul, Turkey between 28 August - 9 September. The juniors going are:

Team 1

1. Bobby Cheng
2. Justin Tan
3. Yi Liu
4. Laurence Matheson
5. Pengyu Chen

Team 2

1. Ari Dale
2. Savithri Narenthran
3. Leteisha Simmonds
4. Mirakla Mithran

Team 3

1. Andrew Pan
2. Megan Setiabudi
3. Jack Puccini
4. Shirley Gu

This is a great opportunity for these juniors, most of whom will still be eligible to compete in the U16 Olympiad for the next year or two. It should be noted that Australia does not send a team to this competition very often, only when there is considerable strength and depth in the U16 squad. Team one is a bit of a super team and should be very competitive in this event. Teams 2 and 3 are of equal strength and have been selected to give the kids experience.

Report on Johns-Putra JETS Camp 2012 by GM Ian Rogers

The annual camp for the 2012 Australian Junior Elite Training Squad, sponsored by Johns-Putra Limited, was held at Box Hill Chess Club from July 2-7. 31 of of Australia's most promising players, mostly aged between 10 and 14, were selected from applicants from all States and territories except Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Only juniors who had competed in a national championship tournament in January (or the Queenstown Open) were eligible to apply. One sign of the current depth of Victorian chess was that more than half of the squad were Victorians. The youngest member of the squad was 7-year-old Emily Lim.

The camp featured three days of intensive training following by a three day training tournament and a simultaneous exhibition by Australian number one, Grandmaster Zhao Zong Yuan. The coaches for the camp included GMs Zhao, Johansen and Rogers, IMs Solomon and Jamieson and FMs Cheng and Ikeda. (At age 15, Cheng was the youngest ever JETS coach). The squad was divided into four groups of six and one of seven for a series of three hour sessions.

Later the coaches voted on the most impressive student from each group, with the winners being: Carlsen group – Kyle Gibson, Kramnik group – Stuart Nicholls, Anand group – Jason Chew and Savithri Narenthran – Polgar group – Zoe Harrison, Hou group – Nicole Chin.

The training tournament was convincing won by Ari Dale with fellow Victorian Savithri Narenthran in clear second place. (See scores below.)

Zhao Zong Yuan's simultaneous exhibition, featuring the talented ring-in Karl Zelesco, finished with 27 wins for the Grandmaster, draws against Chew, Narenthran and Jamie-Lee Guo, and losses against Zachary Loh and Matthew Pyper. Pyper actually beat Zhao twice – when his first win was found to have depended on a misplaced piece, the game was restarted from the (highly unclear) position where the illegality occurred and Pyper proceeded to win again.

A highlight of the 2012 camp was a visit to the Anderson Collection at the Melbourne State Library which is now the third largest chess book collection in the world. The JETS squad were introduced to both the recent and old books, including a page from Caxton's The Game and Playe of Chesse from the 15th century, as well as being shown and read extracts from books more than 400 years old. (Coach Robert Jamieson had luckily given the squad an introduction to chess history during his coaching classes so the students were able to answer many of the presenter's questions.)

Thanks are due to many, including: Geraldine Johns-Putra for sponsoring the squad, Weng Nian Siow for organising the selections and the billets,  Mike Loh and the many volunteers who stocked and manned the canteen during the camp, the families who provided billets, Trevor Stanning who made the Box Hill Chess Club available and assisted in many ways, Allan Richards who organised the JETS t-shirts and Des Cowley of the State Library of Victoria who made the Anderson Collection tour possible.
