JETS report

The 2011 Johns-Putra Junior Elite Training Squad camp was conducted from July 4-9 at Melbourne's Box Hill Chess Club. 30 selected juniors, mostly 14 and younger, assembled for six days of instructions from coaches Zhao Zong Yuan, Darryl Johansen, Ian Rogers, Stephen Solomon, Andras Toth, Doug Hamilton and Vladimir Smirnov.

After a rules and ethics Hypothetical covering the 2014 World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Hou Yifan, the next 2 and a half days saw the 30 juniors divided into groups of 6 and undergoing 3 hours sessions with different coaches. The concentration of the students throughout the sessions was impressive - even the youngest squad member, six-year-old  Emily Lin.

There followed a three day training tournament, with games analysed upon completion by the coaches. Anton Smirnov defeated top seed Emma Guo to lead until a loss in the final round against Karl Zelesco left a fourway tie for first between Guo, Smirnov, Zelesco and Ari Dale.

The camp concluded with a simultaneous exhibition by Rogers against the JETS Squad where Ari Dale was the sole winner.

Thanks are due to Geraldine Johns-Putra, whose sponsorship makes the JETS Camp possible, Trevor Stanning, for organising the venue, Raelene Zelesco for photography and t-shirt distribution, to the many parents who manned the canteen over the six days and to all the coaches and JETS kids.

The Johns-Putra Junior Elite Training Squad is a national development squad for 30 of the best and keenest juniors in Australia. Applications for the Squad generally close at the end of February. To be selected for JETS, a player should have competed in that year's national championship or national junior championship. In 2012, attendance at the Queenstown Classic will also act as a qualifier.

2012 junior championships update

We have 11 registrations for the championship already from four states. As a reminder the website is:
http://www.2012ausjuniorchamps.com/

Because the venue is close to an inner city train station you have many accommodation options. But if you want nearby accommodation we have negotiated special rates for a number of places:

The Australian junior championships is a great opportunity for juniors to develop their chess, not just during the event but also in their preparation leading to the event. On the website we have published a number of specific community initiatives to help juniors prepare for the competition. Currently these initiatives are provided by Melbourne Chess Club, Chess Kids and New South Wales Junior Chess League. Hopefully we will have more soon.
