As for how the show will survive.....Colin Friels left months ago and in his
place has been a new partner for Rachel, so its not like both the leads have
or will be leaving at the same time. The character of Jack Christie will
undoubtedly carry on the show along with the various supporting cast and
whilst I'm sure Catherine leaving will be a big change, I don't think it is
one that Water Rats can't survive from.

Sometimes the lead character can mean the death of the show, but not
in all cases (Doctor Who springs to mind :-))
In Water Rats case, Colin Friels left and I think the ratings really
haven't missed a beat. After a shaky start by Steve Bisley (mainly
during his lead in time before Colin left), he has matured into a
great leading man for the series.
I just wish they would get rid of this third Detective that has
recently joined (the part Aborigine?). I don't have much of a problem
with him per se, but I wish he would stop smiling/laughing each line
he says. He acts like 'Jack the Lad' in every situation/scene, and it
really grates.

Apparently the third detective actually predates Jack. It's just
that he's only been moved into the limelight recently...

Correct. It was shortly before this the aboriginal bloke was first
seen, I believe.

I think it was a long time before. This aboriginal bloke has only
been in it this season, after Colin left at the end of the previous
one. Remember they had episodes where it was thought that Goldie
might take the top job in the detectives area, but that didn't happen,
and the aboriginal bloke came on board.
Christie has been around since second season, at least a full year
before the new guy showed up.
