Whenever the first news/ current affairs show aired. Some fifty years ago.

The current use of "reality" as describing these pathetic game shows is
insulting.

Everything.

But don't go thinking that TT and ACA are anywhere near being proper current
affairs programs.

no, no matter how good the current affairs show, they only deal with aspects
of reality ... depends on the slant of the journalist, the politics of the
show and dare i say, the ratings ...

i don't think they are proper programs let alone have anything to do with

Yes. Couldn't agree more, but these sort of observations tend to kill a
thread. Not enough colour and movement, you know.

if only they could kill reality tv ... i will now attempt to strive for
colour and movement by hypothesing about the virulent avian flu mutating
with the human flu to form a super virus that is then injected in all
reality show contestants, hosts and producers throughout the world causing a
pandemic which wipes out all human urge for "15 minutes of fame" (sic) in a
violent spray of vomit and faeces (or is that the wrong sort of colour and
movement???)

What's interesting is that recent findings on reality shows is that the
bubble has burst. The current crop are going badly on our Aus networks. The
already shown ones may make it for a while but Big Brothel was even having
problems last season though I suspect they weren't that bad.

I must say I don't like reality TV in general but they had "Meet my parents"
(or whatever the proper name was) last year and I thoroughly enjoyed that.
They also have that "fat obnoxious fiancé" show where they have hired an
actor to con the woman's parents in to believing they are getting married
and that is hilarious the way he teases the shit out of her and gets paid
for it! Wouldn't mind THAT sort of job!

I did watch a couple of the early episodes in American Idol and the depth of
crap that got on stage made it really funny but it isn't all that watchable
now.

Glad to see them go in the end if the bubble is definitely bursting. I want
decent sci-fi at decent times of night!!

isn't that the only reason george dubya wants to go to mars? so they can
build a big brother house there? or maybe the next episode of survivor will
be on the international space station ... alas, that's about the only way
you'll get "sci fi" on at a decent time. but thank god the reality TV bubble
is finally bursting ... t'is an abomination i tell ya!

Normally I can get hooked on any reality tv show. But with so many suddenly
on offer they don't seem as interesting anymore.

Allstar survivor is the only one I MUST see. The others I only watch
snippets of. The one that really has me puzzled is the 'my big fat obnoxious
fiance' - that is so cruel that I need to watch what happens.

Isnt "Deal or No Deal" more of a "game show" genre, if that's the one with

At least game shows are a little closer to reality than the other amateur
hour shows though. Of course they are all based on greed with mostly
pre-determined outcomes, aimed at the dumbest viewers.

As long as people are willing to watch them , they will be made.
The only ones I dip into from time to time are the cooking ones, for the
cooking. But they are all staged for dramatic effect, the contestant talking
to the camera is useless waste of time padding.

The shows are cheap to make since sponsors like Coles / Bunning's /Harvey
Norman pay for it to plug their crap.

There are probably far worse reality TV happening o/seas like "celebrity
diving", which thankfully hasn't taken off here.

They are not really about cooking, just about personal rivalries. There are
plenty of actual cooking shows if you want cooking, avoid Ian Hewitson
though!

Exactly, but why people watch them is a mystery. Surely there are not that
many people with single digit IQ's?

That a local version was done at all says a lot about the stupidity
prevalent in the TV industry.
That Karl Stefanovic still has a job, already proved that though! :-(

Speaking of Ben Fordham, when the Korean leader died recently, he referred to him as "King John the third" on radio. Obviously he was reading a news report and had never heard of him before. I lost any little bit of respect I had for him right there and then.

Coach, that doesn't make sense. The Dear Leader was King John the Second. If Fordham was misreading copy, then the copy writer wrote "ill" instead of "il"

Spelling correction may be to blame a little. Mine kept correcting it to I'll but the King John part is inexcusable.

I was under the impression that reality TV was a recent thing & started with
"big brother" "survivor". But according to wikipedia any non scripted shows
are classes as "reality".

Therefore the genre goes back to beginning of television, & includes game
shows and "candid camera".
