Herald Sun reports that Craig Campbell, a producer on Rove Live has been
sacked over the performance by comedian Scott Capurro.

A Network Ten spokesperson said "While we accept there is a risk in any
live television production, something like what happened on Tuesday is
simply unacceptable."

Ten's Melbourne switchboard received almost 250 calls of protest
following Capurro's routine.

I think Campbell is actually executive producer, and not just a producer
as the Herald Sun claims. Campbell use to work for Nine, but jumped ship
to join McManus at Ten, to be apart of the production company Roving
Enterprises.

This decision is way over the top. It's interesting to note that Ten
sacked Campbell, and not Roving Enterprises. If the same sort of
decision making was made at Nine, The Footy Show (probably both AFL and
NRL) would change executive producers every few weeks.

If there was to be any punishment, a reprimand would have been enough.

Rove said earlier this week that he was not aware that Capurro would
come out with the material he did. This puts him at odds with Ten's
stance. I doubt Rove would get sacked. And I wonder what Rove's reaction
to the Campbell sacking is.

To sack an Executive Producer is pretty harsh. Where does the
responsibility lie for the people who produce the guest segments?

I said earlier this week that Rove's comments that Capurro's act was
'disgraceful' I found a bit of a surprise. However, this decision,
whether it's from Ten, or Roving Enterprises, shows both organisations
are conservative, old farts. So much for Ten's creative freedom policy
for shows such as The Panel.

Rove has really lost it. I've been supportive of Rove, hoping his show
would develop. However, stuff like the pointless Paul Hogan interview
(even interviews by The Panel aren't this soft) and this reaction to the
Capurro incident show Rove will turn into another Hey Hey sooner rather
than later. Rove said he didn't want to be seen as the next Daryl
Somers. Well, he's doing a pretty good impersonation at the moment.

Cheers,
Winston

He's sacked, but he's got a great stunt to put on his resume!

Is this the same Craig Campbell who used to read the news at BTV-6 Ballarat
(now WIN TV) back in the mid 80's?

Brisbane in the 80's, or maye the one and the same?

Yes he was on Wombat then came to Melbourne, appeared in a few kids shows
before turning his hand to Directing and Producing. Some of his credits
include Ernie and Denise, New Faces, Don't Forget Your Toothbrush and IMT.
I'm sure Craig won't be unemployed for long.

The buck stops at the Executive Producer....ultimately this was the
"best" choice to get the sack. In such a major fracas, the top bod has
to take the rap - that's the law in management...

Oldest trick in the book apparently.. bit of controversy, some convincing "I
knew nothings" from the host/s, ratings go up, then happy families again. I
heard when approached afterwards Scott Capurro said Rove new excactly what
was gonna go down.. so to speak.. and someone said watching the credits in
as soon as soon as a fortnight might see Mr. Campbell's name magically
reappear.
This episode just made me recall Mick Malloy's recent comments about the sad
lack of cutting edge television in this country.
Amen Mick.

Ten ought not to be so upset. There were probably 250,000 people who were
not fussed, who didn't call the switchboard.

> If there was to be any punishment, a reprimand would have been enough.

I agree. You often wonder in situations like this whether they're in fact
using it as an excuse to get rid of someone they didn't get along with. You
can imagine that it would break their hearts to get rid of Campbell if they
really wanted him there, but obviously they didn't. Compare the
Louise-Theile 'arsehole' to Taylor's 'testicles', and you get the picture.

> Rove said earlier this week that he was not aware that Capurro would

Not really. I think the claim would be one of professional negligence
rather than outright malice.

> And I wonder what Rove's reaction to the Campbell sacking is.

It is likely immaterial. I strongly get the feeling that Rove isn't really
the guy in charge of Rove, if you know what I mean. He's like Paul
McDermott - he rocks up and does his schtick, gets the kudos, but he's there
by the grace of the puppetmasters. Nine made the point - they wanted Rove
(the person), but they didn't want Rove (the show).

> To sack an Executive Producer is pretty harsh. Where does the
> responsibility lie for the people who produce the guest segments?

The producer in charge of that segment. Or if no one, then the EP.

That is very harsh on a creative level. I sadly agree with you. I still
maintain good feelings for Rove, but, you know, he's had long enough to grow
the show into whatever it was going to be. So far, all it is is The Loft
Live(31)/Rove(9)/Rove Live(10) transplanted from one network to another.
Same format, same jokes, same objects on his desk. (Same camerawork and
lighting quality, too!) Even the 'Roving with Rove' segment hasn't changed.

Now, after having had all those years and experience and resources to
develop the show, if this is the best he can come up with, it's not good
enough. The ratings aren't good, it's 'puff', as you point out, the
demographics aren't good, and, frankly, it's not very funny. It's harsh,
but someone's gotta say it. He isn't going to win any Logies so far, and
he's not going to get the biggest laughs if he were on stage with a foreign
audience alongside some of Australia's finest.

Screw that. I've heard quite enough of his paranoid Christ-bashing
homosexual screaming. I'm gonna see Sadowitz and Hedberg.

My standard advice for the festival, by the way, is to go in the first few
days (ie now). There are free tickets everywhere. Anybody who rings my
radio show tomorrow will get free tickets to Carl Dunmore.

Is this the same Craig Campbell who co-hosted The Cartoon Company on Channel
Nein on Saturday mornings in the late 80s?

Incidentally, I walked past Mini-Mick (AKA the star of "You Can't See" by
The Groove Terminator) on Chapel Street in Prahran (Melbourne) on Friday
night. He appeared very stoned (some slurred speech) or drunk and was
accompanied by a friend who was smoking a joint. I suspect he lives around
the area. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mick Molloy Show pulled the first
midget they saw off the street.

I've seen him at the Melbourne casino.

They went to some effort to find those dwarves.
