Philanthropist Jeanne Pratt has urged rich Australians to give more after she was named the 2013 Victorian of the Year.

The widow of wealthy industrialist, the late Richard Pratt, was today acknowledged for more than 30 years contributing to the arts, including live theatre.

Mrs Pratt said she believed the award was the result of her philanthropic work and encouraged all Australians, especially the wealthy, to dig deep for charity.

“Possibly I’ve achieved this award for philanthropy and I want to say that philanthropy is fun,” Mrs Pratt said.

Today Mrs Pratt announced the Pratt Foundation would work with The Smith Family to help 100 students from regional Victoria through high school by matching them with a tutor and funding books and uniforms.

Mrs Pratt, who arrived in Australia from Poland in the 1930s with her poor immigrant family, said education changed her future.

This year’s Young Victorian of the Year is Nicholle Hussey, 22, a founding member of “IN 2 LIFE”, the largest youth suicide prevention program using social media.

Former director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Gerard Vaughan, received the Victoria Day Award for the Arts.
