By overpopulating this country we may at some point tip towards loss
of self sufficiency in some areas or simply have less surplus to
export. Exporting cars or flat screen TV will not take up the slack
as these are higly competitive items.
However we are excellent at exporting agricultural products and
extracted mineral wealth. Our role in the world is to extact and
export those things. It is not to overpopulated the country to the
point that they must be consumed to meet our own internal needs.
The thing to remember is that Australias mass manufacturing is not
going to be a big export given the competivness of China, Japan and
Europe.
Life will get a lot harder.
Note that market Gardens in Melbourn and Sydney have probablty already
disappeared as they are bulldozed for more housing. This means fresh
produce will get a lot more expensive as this is moved to far outlying
areas, often drought prone with higher transport costs or requirements
for cool storage. The costs will make imported frozen vegetables
more competitive.
