NOTORIOUS Queensland pedophile Jesse Spencer Pearce, who was convicted
of child sex offences spanning 30 years, has died in custody, aged 85.
Pearce was sentenced to nine years in jail in May 1997 for his sex
crimes, but was not released when his term expired this year after the
State Government won the right to detain him indefinitely.
The Department of Corrective Services said today that Pearce died
overnight and his death was believed to be suspicious.
Pearce, who was HIV-positive, first abused a child at the age of 22 and
from 1967 until he was caught in 1997, he actively sought out children
to molest in Australia and overseas.
The court was told at his 1997 sentencing that Pearce, who had five
children of his own, defiled the children of friends and employees, and
others he hired for sex overseas.
During the hearing, Pearce was described as a church group member, a
furniture removal business owner, a hot dog stand operator, a "kindly
man" who looked after an invalid old lady, and the teacher of deaf
children in Thailand.
