That was a great show. I'd always greet him with "G'day" whenever he appeared on
my tv screen.

Not only was it the catchiest theme tune of the 1980s, it was also
written and sung by Mike 'Up There Cazaly' Brady.

Hey... I was pretty young last time the ABC showed the Goodies :P

I haven't seen The Goodies here in America
since they took it off in the 70's!!!
and I recently found out that there were episodes made which were never
shown here
in the United States!!! and there was only the
pilot movie of The Girl from Tommorrow shown
here in the U.S. and I recently found out that
the planned series (which I thought did not get
made as planned) was actually made and aired
in Australia!!! I would also like to get copies
of "The Genie From Down Under"
and "Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left"
although righ now, I'm working on getting
episodes of "ocean girl 4" since it's been cancelled in the U.S.
although any of those shows will do.
especially "Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn
Left" I am also looking for copies of Spellbinder 2"
and just for the heck of it, I'd like to see an episode of "Australia's
Funniest Home Videos"
to compare it to it's sister show "America's
Funniest Home Videos".
I almost forgot the reason for me writing this.
How about "The Goodies :Where are they now?"

neri: why they picking on you
boy: because I'm different
neri: I'm different too

Top shows, even if the only bits I remember clearly were the themes. Just
shows what good TV the ABC could make on a shoestring.

Anyone remember "The Henderson Kids" (Nadine Garner and Alex Papps' first
big breaks)?

YES! It was well written and had a reasonable plot to it.

It was also one of Kylie Minogue's first breaks (she played the local
"tough grrl" IIRC).

Even then - in about 1986 or so - Nadine Garner was a far superior
actress to Minogue.

While on this tangent, does anyone remember "The Fast Lane"? - a John
Clarke/Andrew Knight written sitcom for the ABC about two incompetent
private detectives who shared a clapped-out HR Holden and kept getting
rescued by their secretary.

There was a racing greyhound somewhere in there, too…

I loved the Fast Lane!!! didn't the woman who played the secretary
(the one with more brains than the two blokes and their dog combined)
go on to become Whatsher name in Home and Away?

Another Show, albeit British, from the same time was the one with
Richard Griffiths (damn this creeping senility!!! or is the alcohol
drowned brain cells that are making me forget names and titles??).

You know, the one where he played an insurance clerk who accidentally
learns of an illegal deal the company is doing and he and his wife are
in danger and the opening credits were really cool 'cos it was like a
computer game and his wife was Little Red Riding Hood being chased by
the wolf and the music was really great and it came in two series.

that one.

Boy, that's going way back! Let's see how good my memory is. It was
set in a children's home with all these kids who had been taken away
from their absent/abusive/useless parents. I think (and I could be
totally wrong!) that Jason Donovan was in it for a little while (maybe
just one episode). See what you missed out on?!

I loved 'Sweet and Sour'. I had a crush on the sax player. What was
her name?

I think it's:

'It's anything you want it to be, a sausage or a can of beer
A circus or a seaside pier, we make it happen here'.

In one of the Goodies books the words and music are written out by Bill with
comment by the other two. Unfortunately it's the Goodies book I don't have :(

As an extra bonus, if you buy the greatest hits CD you get to hear that
elusive second verse of the faster Goodies theme, which you could sometimes
just hear the beginning of as the credits faded away.

Ahh memories....Just as a matter of course...."WHERE ARE THEY NOW"??? The
Goodies that is, and oh yeah, the good old days too! Was on a bus bound
for Cowra the night this episode aired so I missed, it darn it!

My favourite "Goodies" episode(s) was the one featuring the giant white
kitten, and a close second was when the trio got trapped in that
hibernating T-rex! Steven Spielberg, eat your heart out!

My favourite "Goodie"? Tim. Wonder what he would think of all the current
fuss over the Republic debate?

Yes, I do, It was called "The Saturday Show" hosted by Sherry Wheeler who was
continually being kidnapped by "Barron Von Wierdo" depite 200 kids in the
audience screaming out a warning.

She was always saved by Danny O'Dibble, usually involving some of his "magic
dust" which he kept in a small bag.

Typical tv for kids in those days, all live !

I wondered about this too - I was a bit disappointed that there were
no incidental songs included apart from 'Working the Line', though the album
is still great. Perhaps there was some sort of problem accessing the original
recordings, or something of the sort. ISTR that 'Working the Line' was
released on a Goodies album in the seventies, but most of the other
'incidental' songs weren't.

I agree about AVPP, did you see the sequel, A Very Polish Practice? Not
nearly as good, but worth it. I somehow missed getting Edge of Darkness
on tape, at least it's available retail.
Any takers for the best British drama/drama-comedy? Mine would be any of
those previously mentioned: AVPP, Edge of Darkness or The Singing
Detective. I'd also include the adaptation of Jeanette Winterson's
Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.

If I include any series up to now my favorite is Cracker, a profound and
brilliant examination of the dark side of humanity. Although The Singing

"working the Line" is indeed on my "Goodies - Almost Live at the Cricklewood
Palladium" record. I haven't listened to it for a while though. I know it
has Rock With a Policeman and Nappy Love on it as well, and to my eternal
embarrassment, I can't remember the rest of the songs <blush>

Fair enough, though you are talking only about the early ones written by
Jimmy McGovern, i take it?

OK it is called "Yum Yum! Best of the Goodies" (or something very close
to this).

The label is called something like 'music club" and it was released
5/97. I'll bring the CD in tomorrow and write out the full details
and if you're all good a track listing :)

I picked it up at HMV in Melbourne, and I know it's available in a few
other places, you just have to keep your eyes open ;0

Yes, but he did write around 90% of the episodes. IIRC it was only those
last 2 stories of the 3rd series, and the HK special that were written by
someone else.

Then there's 'Rock with a Policeman' :

I'm gonna rock with a policeman (rock? rock?)
gonna roll with a policeman (certainly not)
Oh you can see 'em on the beat,
doin' the blue-beat boogie with the flat feet.

This was just one of the dozen or so songs featured on, "The New Goodies
LP" which I used to have in the middle seventies.

I always thought 'wild thing' was crap but I did like 'The Funky
Gibbon'.

That's interesting, because, while "The Funky Gibbon" was written by Bill,
"Wild Thing" wasn't.

"Wild Thing" was actually initially released on record by the English pop
group, The Troggs, so the Goodies' version is a send-up of their (The
Troggs) song. Actually, the Goodies' rendition of "Wild Thing" (from "The
Goodies - Almost Live ... Live ... Live!") is *far* better than the
Troggs' version. Where the Troggs sounded quite bland when they sang "Wild
Thing", the Goodies sparkled!

The same was true of the send-up of Louis Armstrong's song "What a
Wonderful World", which was sent-up by the Goodies - and John Cleese -
in their radio program "I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again". Bill, of
course, sang the Louis Armstrong part.

While on the subject of Goodies' songs, what about "Taking You Back",
"Winter Sportsman", "Identikit Girl" and the "In-Betweenies". All
classics!

And here it is -- but I won't attempt to include the comments by the
other two :)

Goodies -- Goody Goody Yum Yum.
Take a bit of good advice
Take a trip to paradise.
It's really not so hard to find
You've got it in your mind.
It's whatever turns you on.
It's anything you want it to be
A record or an OBE
A circus or a seaside pier
We make it happen here.
Fine for you and me, all the family.
Goodies -- Goody Goody Yum Yum
Goodies -- Goody Goody Yum Yum
We're coming for you.
Anyone can ride along.
Anyone can sing our song.
There's nothing you cannot do.
And you'll be a Goody too.
All you need's a little love.
Goodies -- Goody Goody Yum Yum.

ISTR there's actually 2 versions of these lyrics -- I certainly remember
the bit about the sausage and the can of beer, which isn't in this
version.

It was John Meilon (the spelling may be wrong) who starred in the excellent
ABC TV movie "The Fourth Wish". He also starred in the OLD Aus comedy "My
