Does anyone have a figure for how much channel 10 might have made out
of all the SMS voting in Australian Idol

The other channels "current affairs" shows like ACA and TT have both
done beatups on the fact that the station and Telstra have made a whole
shitload of money out of the voters.

TT even ran a story where they claimed in other countries like the USA
voting for Idol was FREE so why couldn't it be FREE here in Australia
too, if the story was true of course?

In article <3FB3A95C...@hotmail.com>, Muggy...@hotmail.com says...
Out of an estimated audience of 2.2 million, 1.4 million votes were received in last week's
voting. That's two votes for every three people watching. In dollar terms that is A$770,000
generated on the back of two hours of programming. - TheAge, Nov 1

It's a commercial show, on a commercial TV station they will try and get as
much revenue as they can where ever possible.

In the USA the CD's they sell, might actually pay for the show, in Australia
they can't afford to do that.

Turn that shit off anyway, it'll rot your brain long before you mobile will

Not only do they get avdertising and SMS revenue for this low-budget
dreck, but they also build up a database of the mobile numbers of dumb,
poor-taste, gullible consumers for future promotions.
Cross-reference that with fly-buys, and other data-bases, and they
know an awful lot about you.

the shows

Because then the families of the "idols" would vote for their own
1000000 times if it was free.

"Free" would still mean the normal cost of a phone call or SMS. So instead
of 55c, it would cost between 10c and 20c.

fucking let them. It's not like they're being forced.

Ah, but if that's true, then all the families would do it so they would just

Acxtually they know fuck all about you. What they do have is - a phone
number, A rough approximation of your age from the known Aus idol
audience and from that your number is a property saleable to oufits
that market consumer goods and services that are targeted at the Aus
idol demographic. Of course he company produxing Aus idol makes
ashitload of extra cash from teh folls who pay 55 cents each time they
"vote." As for the votes actually being used to decide a winner, as in
the Big Brother series, we have no real proof that the phone votes are
counted. Vote on, you little sheep, Telstra loves the profits you give
it and so do the Aus idol producers.

And what's the actual cost to implement this probably nowhere near 55 cents.

I'd bet it even costs a hell of a lot less then the normal 25 cents to send an SMS
especially when most of the hard work happens in the background with automated
systems taking up the slack and doing all the hard work.....

don't you remember the National IQ Test,

Any fool who sits and stares at everwhere mcguire all night for the
socalled "IQ test" doesn't need to answer any test questions. The fact
that they bother to watch that cheap shit proves the lack of any real

The charge for SMS is the flat rate, as per your deal with your mobile
phone carrier or web sms service . The fee goes to the telco only - the
telco isnt going to give a kickback to Idol is it.

The 0055 number does include a service charge, and that is where the issue
is.
Why should idol be able to make money off the 0055 /1900 service ?
Why didnt they just get a 13 (or 1300) number ? They pay a small fee, and
the user pays a local call charge. The only possible reason is to encourage
the use of SMS, to relieve the load on the voice service.

The SMS was a "188" service and the income would be shared between the telco
and the opeartor.

the little bit way at the bottom of the screen, advised that
the phone call OR SMS was 50 or 55 cents

On news was stated that an audience of 3.5 million for Idol
final, so it does not take many SMS to make a lot of money
