I'm pretty sure there was a simultaneous broadcast when Di died. Whether it
happened since is not to my knowledge.

It's not happening now. SBS is still showing a subtitled movie. :)

So typical, SBS being a station that prides itself on World News, it was the
last one to cross over. And after all the action had occured as well.
Obviously in the SBS newsroom no one was in sight, th lights were off. As
soon as the closer rolled for the 9.30pm news at 9.55pm, the whole newsroom
and studio were out the door home. Must have been someone at home who called
in to get pres to switch across to raw BBC World feed with no local angle
etc unlike what the other Australian networks were doing.

They do have a limited budget don't forget. They most likely had to do a
bit of negotiation to get a live feed of the action.

Considering that all the other networks are non stop coverage of this, it
isn't a great loss if SBS don't immediately cross to what is happening.

Besides, the USA is a mainly English speaking country. They can't really
show off how they can pronounce all the foreign names with this story, so I
guess it falls down the priority list for them.

Mind you, I normally find the non stop coverage of these sorts of events to
be less than helpful. They tend to all just stand around talking about
things that we just don't know about yet, and often report rumour as fact.

But this time it was a bit different. Because the story unfolded over time
in bits and pieces, it was perfectly suited to the non stop coverage like
this. I wonder if it was planned that way. I guess they could not have
planned the collapse of the towers to be timed like that.

PS. Did any notice that Ch10 still ran commercial breaks for the first 30 to
45 minutes of all this. I wonder how many viewers were lost to the
advert-free coverage on Ch2 and Ch9. Possibly Ch7 too, but I don't watch
that station.

But at least they went to the BBC feed as opposed to 7/9/10 who all went
with CNN (supplemented by NBC/ABC/CBS). Allowed for a different perspective.

SBS are the smart ones. They realised that the ABC, 7, 9, 10
networks, and the community channel were already covering the
event and provided alternative programming.

Basically, they realised that viewers were already well catered
for.

Don't forget, CTV-31 also had the BBC World feed.

The community channel 31 had the BBC World feed an hour or two
before SBS did.

SBS realised that the other FTA channels were already covering
the event, and stuck with their movie. Good call.

And prior to that it was the Gulf War being broadcast on all
stations.

I still don't believe Fishcam exists - every time I am in Melbourne and
check Ch31 at the appropriate time, it's nothing but slides.

Anyway, Sydney Ch31's is the best - long loop tapes of Belgian Music TV,
ie. actual entertainment, not a screen saver.

Pity I can't get it in Wollongong :(
