apologies for bringing up an oldish subject but a few weeks ago I
could have sworn I saw actress Rachael Griffiths protesting at the
Melbourne casino opening in the nickey noo.

I couldn't see anything in the papers the next couple of days so
doesn't what prompted her to perform this odd yet strangely compelling
act ?

thanks in advance

Shown on the late news. Body painted white; long-shot. The woman wasn't
identified on the telecast I saw, but if you say it was Rachael Griffiths, I
believe you.

She added serious sex appeal to the anti-casino protests.

There was a photo of her in Who Weekly or New Weekly or one of those
weeklies and yes, it *was* Rachael Griffiths but I can't remember exactly
her reason for protesting. But basically she was naked, except for a loin
cloth and some white paint.

It was indeed Rachel. She got <ahem> uncoverage in the Murdoch papers
(including the front page of Adelaide's Advertiser, IIRC).

Whatever it takes for the naked truth

By JAMES BUTTON

Rachel Griffiths says it is usually forgotten that Lady Godiva was a
political activist.

Lady Godiva's naked ride through Coventry in the 11th century was a
protest against heavy taxes. Out of respect, the townsmen stayed
indoors, except a certain Tom who peeped - hence the phrase.

At the opening of the new Crown casino on Thursday night, Ms
Griffiths, an actress who played a lead role in the film Muriel's
Wedding, stepped out of a stretch limousine wearing only a loin cloth
and a crown of thorns.

Accompanied by a four-year old girl called Rainbow, who threw coins on

the ground, Ms Griffiths held up a banner that said ``Need not
greed'', then dropped the banner to reveal her bare breasts. A crowd
cheered, police tried to cover her up, Ms Griffiths got back in the
car and it drove away.

The performance ``was completely out of character''. She says she is
not a political person - she once attended an anti-fees rally while an
arts student at Melbourne University - or an exhibitionist.

But she says she wanted people to remember a different image from the
opening of the new Crown casino. Something besides the glitz, glamor
and gushing. An image that said ``we don't all feel that way''.

Ms Griffiths, 29, who has acted with the Melbourne Theatre Company and

just finished a film in the United States with Julia Roberts, has been

feeling ``sadder and sadder'' about the city in which she was born.
``I love the trams, the seasons, the intimacy of Melbourne,'' she
says.

But on her return after spending much of last year making films
overseas, the actress saw the new casino rising on the Yarra, and
gambling ``sold to us in an ever-present, one-sided, false way''.

Ms Griffiths planned the protest with about eight friends, some of
whom recorded it on camera.

From a Catholic family, she admires church groups that protest against

gambling and hopes her appearance as Christ descending from the cross
did not offend them. She says she wanted to highlight a ``cash-driven
society'' where only economic values count.

Did she have to appear topless to do it? Absolutely, says Ms
Griffiths. Sure, she nods, ``flash your tits and get on television''.
But she also knew she was going up against the most extravagant
production Melbourne has ever seen.

She laments that while New York has the Statue of Liberty, Paris the
Arc de Triomphe and Sydney the Harbor Bridge and Opera House - ``which

represent progress and culture'' - Melbourne may now be known by the
casino.

While she thinks the Premier, Mr Jeff Kennett, has done some good
things for Victoria, ``if we're going to have a casino, why not spend
$300 million more on education? Why not stop closing hospitals?''

Another inspiration for her ``art installation, one-woman protest''
was an episode of The Simpsons.

In the episode, Springfield gets a casino and suddenly casino signs
spring up all over town. Marge Simpson goes to protest, gets hooked on

gambling and baby Maggie is left alone for hours on end.

Ms Griffiths laughs. ``It's hilarious. It's exactly Melbourne today.''

Yup, that WAS her, she was on Recovery.

AND if you don't know why the papers didn't mention it, well, I hope
you enjoyed the Logies.

Apparently, she was protesting against the casino (as could be
guessed!), as well as capitalism, child care, Kennett, the gambling
religion that has struck Melbourne, and other things. She was supposedly
dressed as Jesus.

Did anyone see any photos of this (I only "heard" about it). Iwould like
very much to see Rachel in the "nickey noo"! drool, drool... :-)

Some of the papers did cover it, and a national chick mag had a photo that
showed her as she was. Did you get the bit that she was meant to be
Christ?
Apparently Mr Blue heelers John Wood was going to add some more about the
casino if he won a logeter.

Chris.
