When did Molly start wearing the hat?

Somebody put Edy out of his misery...

By the time Countdown finished, Molly Meldrum's hat was well and truly
his trademark.

However, plenty of old material of a pre-hatted Molly still
circulates, and Edy seems to think he's seen Countdown material with
Molly's head naked, but he could be wrong. So was it indeed some time
during the Countdown days when Molly began donning the Akubra?

Edy, Molly doesn't wear an Akubra, he wears a Barma hat. You are
thinking of John Laws who wears the Akubra. Here's a link to the

Corrections re type of hat elsewhere

IIRC, Olivia Newton-John gave him one in about 1980 and he's been
wearing them ever since.

I think it was around the time of John Farnham's resurgence (yes he once
went away before) in the early 80's (whenever Whispering Jack came out).

I remember a Countdown episode with Molly wearing THE hat. John (no longer
Johnny) lifted it from Molly's head to expose him as having had his hair
shaved off. From then on the hat stayed on.

He originally wore no hat on countdown. I remember years ago someone pulled his hat off, boy did he look pissed off. Maybe he has a bald patch or something.
