Well.. this is progressing rather more nicely than I would have
expected... well done guys!

Here's a version with all of the updates I've got so far slotted in. Note
that the episode which was listed as 'undated' in the previous version has
tentatively been pegged to the 26th June, as Graham & The Colonel made a
reference to Craig McDermott coming home from the Ashes with a twisted
bowel, which was in the news (according to the CricInfo archives,
http://www.cricket.org/) on the 24th. This dating is dodgy at best, but if
anyone can do any better they're welcome to try.

I have also gone and done a complete run-through of the 'Sydney' episode
and the previously-undated episode -- I will flesh out the brief summaries
of the other episodes I have on tape through the week.

Would it help to have a list of dates on which the Late Show aired?
(I'm pretty sure I have all the TV Weeks from '92 and '93 in a box
somewhere.)

If I'd taped the whole series there'd be no trouble, cos in those days
I used to date all my tapes.

<Hopefully any follow-ups along the lines of "Why, wouldn't any girls
go out with you?" will be prevented by my using the line here.>

But Wait! There's More! :)

I returned from my friend's place tonight bearing three VHS tapes. My
theory of just looking for the tapes with my handwriting on the label didn't
quite work... about 30% of their tapes *still* have the labels I wrote for
them in 1993. :) And they have a lot of tapes! My friend and I agree that
there were probably at least two more tapes at one stage, but the current
location of these is unknown.

I decided to focus on these new additions this evening. Sadly, the two
tapes I've checked contain only one episode each. The remaining tape,
according to its label, has Episodes 1 and 2 of first set of The Best Bits
of The Late Show... the ones covering 1992. From briefly viewing this tape
earlier, it looks like it may be in a very poor state... and it won't even
rewind properly. :(

You've come to the right place. Bear with me.

First, in attempting to date one of the eps I'm adding tonight, I knew that
the Tour de France had started during the week. According to the official
website, the Tour ran from 3/7/93 until 25/7/93. Now 3/7 is effectively 4/7
Australian time, dating the episode in question at 10/7/93. (Hurrah!) I
was already suspicious that this was the date following a sketch carrying
the subtitles that it was supposed to have occurred on Friday the 9th.

Now another clue I had jotted down was that Graham and the Colonel had
referred to the bells they had had the previous week. This would date your
contribution to 3/7/93.
Obviously this is relying on Graham and The Colonel getting this fact
correct.

TV Week
TV Plus (TV liftout magazine in Adelaide's _Sunday Mail_)
The Guide (TV liftout in Adelaide's _Advertiser_)

How many episodes?
-----------------
The total of 44 episodes doesn't seem to tally with Mick and Tony's
"40 episodes" statement in the season 2 finale. It's possible that the
show was occasionally replaced at the last minute. I've checked most
episodes of season 2 by looking them up in The Guide. Published on the
Thursday before each episode aired, it's likely to be a lot more
accurate than TV Week (published several weeks earlier). The only
episode I wasn't able to confirm in The Guide was August 14 (I'm
missing that one), but it is listed in TV Plus.)

Also, there are only 21 repeats -- did they not repeat one, or does
this mean there were only 21 episodes in season 2?

It should be noted that Mick and Tony actually said the finale was
their "40th live episode" -- if the early episodes weren't live, that
would account for the discrepancy. Or maybe Mick and Tony were absent
from a couple of episodes, and they're only talking about *their*
episodes?

Footnotes:
---------

[1] I don't have any TV guides for this week, so I'm just guessing it
was on.
[2] These are the exact titles given in TV Week.
[3] "Final", according to TV Plus & The Advertiser; I don't have the
TV Week for this week, but I'd lay odds that it says "Final", too.
See [4].
[4] The Singing Detective, according to TV Week; The Late Show
according to TV Plus & The Guide

The show's title:
----------------

TV Week uses a number of titles for the show in the first season:

# 1: The D-Generation
# 2: A Week of It
# 3: The Late Show
# 4 - 19: D-Gen, The Late Show (I don't have the TV Weeks for #6
& #11, but it seems fair to guess its the same)
#20 - 22: The Late Show

The second season is always "The Late Show"

(TV Plus and The Guide mostly use "The D-Gen" as the show's title in
the first season, with "The Late Show" as a subtitle. The first
episode is called "The D-Generation" by TV Plus, and "The D-Gen - The
Late Show" by The Guide.)

Typo...?

D'oh! Naturally, it's supposed to be 1993.

As for what's odd... it surprised me a bit, too, as I only remember
there being 4 Best Ofs in 93. But then, I can only report what the
magazines say...

As for the 93/94 Best Of series: you realise of course that these
magazines are stored in the bottom box of a pile of 5 heavy boxes of
magazines, and they've all been restored to their rightful locations
by now? :)

I'll check it out tomorrow.

Yeah, I remember these, now that you mention them. Unfortunately none
of the guides I looked through made any distinction between a regular
"Late Show" and these compilations.

Which theory's that? Below, I speculate as to why there seem to be too
many episodes, but I'll happily concede that it's all bollocks now
that you've reminded me about the in-season compilations.

I understand the two-week break in season 2, with the D-Gen clips and
the Olden Days compilation. But what did they do in the first season?

Well, it was late, and my eyes had glazed over after browsing through
a hundred TV Weeks :)

Yes :)

I don't have the programs (alas)... just the TV guides :)

Why do I keep them? Well, I'm not sure. I paid for 'em, and I'm damned
if I'm gonna waste my money by throwing 'em out! But seriously,
they're a wealth of information about movies and TV shows. Last year
when I put together my guide to the episodes of Seinfeld that Ten was
skipping, they came in very handy... When I start to wonder about
something like that, I get terribly frustrated when I can't find out,
which is probably why I started keeping them in the first place. I'd
claim they came in handy when I was doing my "Ramble", but of course I
started keeping them long before that, so it wouldn't wash :)

I've thought of cutting them up to just keep the TV guide bits and get
rid of all the junk about teenage soap stars, but that'd be a lot of
work. And tonight I found a '92 issue of TV Plus with Natalie
Imbruglia on the cover, which I guess might be worth something some
day... And one TV Week had a piccie of the Goodies which I don't think
I've seen anywhere else...

And they come in handy in situations like this :)

I AM NOT A BASKET CASE!

Yes.

As an additional to my post yesterday... the ep I assigned as "19?" did
contain a bit with Mick saying that they'd be showing the 8th installment of
Bargearse.

Also, I've been thinking more about this two week break. I now recall that
on one of the weekends they showed an "The Best of The Original
D-Generation", introduced by Rob and possibly Santo, sitting in a darkened
Late Show set, on stools which were just way too high.

I also had another idea on how to confirm these things, but that idea really
is too sad to post. :)

There's something odd about this... and I don't just mean the typo. Also
you don't mention the late 93/early 94 "Best Of" Series.

> 1 1993 06 05

Your dates thankfully correlate with my dates for what I know were eps 1-3.

They also correlate with my belief of what were eps 13, 14 and 17 (reflected
as 15, 16 and 19 in your list) and Paul's dates. (Um... hang on... so where
did the theory disproving the break come from?)

You miscounted. There were 20 repeats. They missed the first two eps, but

they used the two non-eps.

This theory is getting more and more complicated. You can see why I prefer
mine. :)

This all does beg one question though... um... err... *why* do you have all

these archival copies of Television Programs?

(You're making me feel far less worried about the kinds of things I used to

collect when I was younger!)

Haha... take your time Daniel. :)

And for the folks at home, those measurements once again:

This is an obscure Late Show reference isn't it? :)

Close. I got the measurements from "Poop Chute".

Of course there's also a Shed-*DING!*-world reference.

Oh dear.. I'm away from the group for 2 days, and the whole plan seems to
come apart... who would have thought Late Show airdates were so complex?

I vote we just find Tommy G's home phone number and ring him and ask.. it
would be so much easier.

I'll use the airdate information you two have rather expertly gleaned and
assemble it into the list tomorrow (I don't have the list here at the
moment), with the assumption of a gap between 10 and 11. We'll keep
working out airdates based on references, and hopefully once we have all
20 eps catalogues and dated, the ep numbers will sort out any
inconsistencies by themselves. How's THAT?

Well.. it came from the numbering of the Sydney episode as 16, I think...
but I don't know where we got that from... I think it just turned up.

Ah well.

Paul.

I just thought I would try begging one more time for any kind soul to sell me
some copies of their episodes of the late show.
Like I said "sell" , I will pay you, please, it will make you feel good knowing
you have reunited a fan of the D-Generation from way back with some classic
D-Gen comedy.
O.K. how pathetic do I sound ?
Lou.

If you send me what you've got when you've done all you can then I'll
go through my tapes. They are on tape in sequence so that might help
a little.

Then again, you might complete it without me. ;-)

Byeeeee.
