huh?
Test patterns are very rarely seen these days.
Apart from some South Australian and NT regional stations, no-one closes
down anymore.
And SBS persists with that crap drop field out of date satellite photo
during its down time.
good luck in finding one.

Out of date? They normally are quite fresh - certainly fresh enough for
weather purposes. Are you taking into account that the timestamp is Zulu
time - ie. UTC?

On that, does anyone have any screenshots or video of Channel 8 on their
computer.
I asked a while ago, but no response, hopefully someone has something....

I remember a few years ago when this question was asked, someone
mentioned there was actually a webpage that collected TV testcards
from around the world. (To my surprise I'd found out the B&W era ABC
had borrowed the 'girl with doll and blackboard' from the BBC..)

In the past I used to put that crappo map to air. And yes, it is UTC or Zulu
time. It is not automatically updated, it has to be manaully updated by
downloading off the net, and usually the map seen around 2am is already 2
hours old as the source web server only provided maps every 2 hours. By 5 am
when the next operator comes in it is upto 5 to 6 hours old. Dutring
daylight saving, add another 3 hours to that when it gets screened on the 3
hour time delay that feeds WA and by then it is way out of date. Northern
Australia viewers would regulary call for a more updated map during cyclone
emergencies, but alas, a near live map is unable to be sent to the delay
states including QLD which is also in on delay during daylight saving. There
was one night when the web server where the maps are downloaded from was not
able to be commincated to by the SBS WeatherWatch PC, and as such I was not
putting a more than 24 hours out of date satellite photo to air. Instead, I
had no option to run the good old phillips SBS test pattern complete with
stereo tone. This I did around last March. That is the last time I am aware
a that that a test pattern was screened in Sydney. There are people working
behind the scenes to get a test pattern transmitted on the spare 3rd SD
digital service on ABC Digital. Wait and see.

Um - 2 hours is what I would consider current.

That's what I'd consider as "ready for an update", but not "out of date".

That I accept as getting on a bit, but is not something I'm going to lose
much sleep over admittedly. The population of WA is relatively small, the
population of WA who see WeatherWatch is smaller still, and the population
of WA who see WeatherWatch and who are keen on having the latest image is
smaller still. And they can get one off the web themselves.

A cyclone emergency is a specialised event, beyond the scope of my comment.
When there's no emergency, the map is only a general interest thing. And
this is losing sight of the fact that, at the end of the day, it's not meant
to be a Weather Channel service. It's merely meant to be more interesting
than a test pattern, which it now is. Face it, there's close to no need for
a test pattern during the early hours - if you're going to have anything up,
you may as well make it interesting. So we get a map with a range of
colours and music. That's what it is about.

When the map first comes on in the east, it's typically near enough to
current to be of interest as a weather map. After that, of course it's
beyond reasonable to expect it to be updated.
