Hi!
I'm back - alive and well, except for the 1000-odd messages on assorted
newsgroups :). The Comedy Festival was great - I'd forgotten how much fun
it is. I saw David Strassman, who was great as always, and Rich Hall, who
died on his arse. I saw several aussie comedians too.

I love Melbourne - the people there are really friendly. I, as always,
stayed in St Kilda. I got involved in about three protest marches in the
city, signed various petitions and kissed by strangers. I love weird
people. I also saw our buddy, John Safran, in Acland Street.

Speaking of brushes with fame, I also saw Gaby Millgate filming TFF on St
Kilda beach...now my life is complete.

I'm incredibly broke - I bought about 5 different cd's (all britpop =)),
three t-shirts, and spend more than I should have on Formula One stuff.

I didn't want to come home - School starts on Tuesday (although, of course,
I have to go in on the Monday) and I still have two major assignments to do.
*sigh*

interestingly for the one who was saying they had to grow up, Joey
was reverting to her childhood. Don't you recall a few weeks back
she made this big deal with Dawson about wanting to go play in
the closet like they used to as kids.. and I think maybe she used
to hide in there at other times. I think it's got something to do
with that.

I'll never get over the sad sequence of realisations I had the first time I
was there. I just couldn't help it. The footpath was suspiciously
familiar. Then I spotted *that* arcade and it was all downhill from there
("Oh look... there's *the* KFC").

It's just lucky my friend was also a fan of The Late Show and was at least
able to understand what I was on about when I painstakingly pointed it all
out to him. :)

Sheesh... I'm getting withdrawal symptoms. Can't believe it's been three
years since my last visit.

And why is it every time I'm there if I choose to sit down in the Bourke
Street Mall someone will inevitably come up to me and ask for directions?
And why am I always able to answer? Never understood that.

>emma, wearing her Ted E Bare t-shirt
>http://members.xoom.com/Fever_Pitch

Ah yes... back in the days when I used to watch Hey Hey and Strassman used
to do the same old schtick every time, my Ted E Bare impersonations used to
be quite popular. :)

S: And then what did he do?
T: He put me in the mike-ro-wave... and he put it on *high*.

...

T: Yeeeeeaaaaaaah

That's all I can remember now. Life was dull in high school apparently.

Then again we could have

"Are you talking to me?"
"DON'T YOU LOOK AT ME!"
"Are you talking to me?"
"DON'T YOU LOOK AT ME!"
"Are you talking to me?"
"DON'T YOU LOOK AT ME!"
"Is that what you want?
Would that make you happy?
Do you *know* what you want?"

..exchanges for hours, which I think kind of says it all. :)

Is this the place where I admit that I had my photo taken just outside the
Safeway on Acland St? "Look, Mick & TOny have stood *right here*!"

I also took a place of the Job Warehouse (but at least I didn't go searching
for it - it's right across from Gaslight Music). Last time I was there I
tracked down a couple of the other places - Stacks of Slax and The Bolt
Bloke {grin}

A sadder tourist attraction I have not seen. :)

Even the World's Biggest Rocking Horse in the Adelaide Hills is more
exciting. I mean you can climb it. Then you get a sticker which says you
climbed it. :)

And the view... well.. err... well you can see the surrounding trees just a

Hey, don't diss the rocking horse, man. :) At least it's not as bad as the
lobster/crayfish thingy at Kingston. (Which, from a distance, looks kind of
like a horned kangaroo, as I discovered last week:)). ANd nowhere near as
bad as the Giant Koala at Dadswell Bridge.

Well it is an official Late Show site after all. :)

"wwwwwwwwwhat's all that about?"

BIG things are another item I take an interest in. I'd love to go around
taking photos of BIG things and make a website for them. The whole concept
is just hilarious... and there's always a story behind them. That and it
*does* provide a means to take a look at the features of a region.

My favourite is what I believe to be the original and the best... The Big
Merino at Goulburn. Possibly because I first saw it when quite young and it
would have looked even bigger then. I've always been rather fond of The Big
Cheese in Narooma as well. I'm not too fussed with the Big Banana at
Coffs... although I liked the Big Prawn (? I think) at Ballina.

The World's Biggest Sundial at Singleton is a classic. That probably *is*
lamer than Captain Cook's Cab... err.. Cottage.

Oh and Em... I do love the Big Rocking Horse. I was staying in Hahndorf
that time and we spent a day touring the Hills... all beautiful and misty it
was too.

Well fortunately that room is down the hill at dad's place. Hmmm... how can
I describe it. I think it was meant to be a kind of apple/pear green... but
the room only got natural light in the mid afternoon, so it always came out
as a darker green.

It's not a good colour.

Now this one I liked. One of those ones that friends overseas find quite
mind bogling. And yet, so educational... <g>.

The Big Potato is another fave. But I'm wondering when we get the Big Wig,
in honour of Ray.

(Oh, as an aside, I like the road trip prank of dressing up explorers
statues with sunglasses and football beanies. The best one of these was in
Perth, where some explorer had some plans under his arm, and was pointing to
a thing off in the distance. Some local wag had placed a cigarette between
his fingers, and damn me if it didn't look spot on <G>.)

I'm obviously not doing enough road trips because I've never heard of
that being done. What a great idea. Sounds like the kind of thing Loaded
magazine would have a field day with.

Great idea for a website too. I suppose it's already been done though.

Interestingly (or not) enough, some friends and I were discussing Big
things just this weekend. They said that The Big Cheese was just a water
tower painted yellow -- is this correct?

There used to be a Big Pavlova on the old Hume Highway south of
Goulburn,
as well. It was a round tin shed, painted white and pink. Long gone,
alas.

The only provisio being that Anzac statues are out of bounds. But there's
usually enough explorers or foreign kings on horses to go round. In a weird
varient on this theme, I've seen a dead wombat (road to Thredbo. There's
always a couple) propped up against a tree wearing a scarf, ski goggles and
smoking a rolly. We took photos. Another friend of mine did the Horses Arse
Tour of Europe and took photos of as many horses arses, statues and real ones
as she could. So much a change from castles.

Not seen one yet, but I have seen a Gratuitous Butt Shot site that wasn't too
remarkable.

Okay... the three references and the Big Things I've seen...

>VICTORIA
>Big Ned Kelly, Glenrowan

From _Postcard from Glenrowan_

"Look what they've done to his helmet!"

"This is how Ned Kelly used to convince his mother he was asleep in bed"

And something about it being a world class tourist attraction judging by the
quality of the signage. :)

>Giant Worm, Phillip Island

Wwwwwwwhat's all that about?

>World's Biggest Egg, Meredith

Don't think if this really counts for the Vizard reference... as they were
talking about a giant egg found in WA or something.

>Big Brontosaurus, Connabarabran

Rofl that's right.. forgot about that. The Warrumbungles are somewhat more
impressive though. :)

That brings back memories too. Great spot.

Say what? I don't recall a Big Gold Panner in Bathurst.

I do I do... but I want PHOTOS, details of what facilities/exhibits/etc. are
available at the BIG thing, the rationale behind the BIG thing. Of course
the best would be to be able to *personally* visit them and give them The
Big Quokka Rating out of 10. :)

Kind of The Lonely Planet Guide to BIG THINGS as it were. :)

I think I have photos of The Big Merino and that rocking horse, but that's
it.

Hehehe.. as were mine (though not any more, sadly).

That's always scared me off seeing Strassman... some of his stuff is quite
funny, but you can only hear the same routine so many times before it starts
to grate -- the two best exaples of this are Strassman and The Amazing
Johnathon (sp?). The words 'sometimes magic SOUNDS like tape' aren't *that*
funny to begin with, let alone on his 4th repeat visit.

Pphh. I lived there, and I can happily say: "It's not so big."

> Giant Worm, Phillip Island

As others have pointed out, very impressive. Less so when I was there, as the
tank which held the big shark was out of action, as it had been leaking
formaldehyde or somesuch.

> World's Largest Codfish, Tocumwal

Really? Surely someone's built a larger codfish than that.. it's pretty
mediocre. I could build a bigger one with some 4x2s and some baling twine.

By the way, on the topic of Captain Cook's Cabin... can anyone think of any
other Late Show sketches which were pretty clearly Melbourne-centric? There
weren't many that I can think of, except for that (Things of Stone & Wood) and
the "New York, New York" sketch, which still cracks me up every time, while
friends from Sydney sit there po-faced.

And don't forget - he now introduces himself as 'Chanel nine's David
Strassman' - even to people who have actually signed to chanel nine
themselves... aaah - go comfest gossip! Did anyone trek out to
Nicholson's to see Shame? One of the best shows at the fest in my
opinion.

Oh, i so wish i'd had the guts to interupt one of Strassman's (or even
Craig Charles') performances by pressing the deliveries bell at the back
of the Athenaeum.. Apparently there's a bell which one must press when
there are deliveries to the theatre which is quite loud and cannot be
turned off during performances - quite a nifty sabotage device.

I'm not a large Strassman fan (sorry to the people who saw him, i'm not
trying to flame you at all) and i thought his prices seemed a little
exhaubitant especially since there were some rather impressive comics
doing shows for around $10 - $12 cheaper - namely Wil Anderson, Tripod,
Greg Fleet, etc..

Did anyone else make a pilgrimage to the comfest (or at least just go if
you're from melbourne!)? I'd love to hear stories and remeniscing..
personally my last night at the festival club kicked arse but that's a
long story...

Oooooh yeah! I rate him very highly and if anyone has the chance to
still go see him, GO! I actually got a free ticket to this (thanks to a
certain jjj dj friend of mine) and hadn't been planning to see his show.
I am soooo glad i did though. The rubix cube bit was hilarious as was

really? i have heard shocking reviews in the media about this as well as
from many aussie comedians performing in the festival themselves. I
didn't go and see it due to the bad reviews so i suppose i can't really
talk. Although - i did see one of the guys at the festival club and

better when in Sydney as a lot of his jokes are sydney based. Poor guy

and what a lovely guy Rove is. Spent a fair while talking to him and
Peter Helliar at the festi-club on my final night in melbourne. We all
got chucked out together when they were trying to close the club for the
night and i ended staying up all night with them so that i wouldn't miss

You cannot believe how thankful i am that i didn't waste my money on
this show.. SO glad it was sold out.

I sent off an email to the abc asking when they will show the stuff from
the festival club that they were filming. Possibly one of the most
useless replies ever was received:

We have telecast the stand up routines by the actor from
Jonathan Creek but have no set date as yet for any other
material.

Suggest you keep checking a reliable TV guide.

Okay people... it's on. I'll probably be driving to Scone for work in a few
weeks (lucky me!) and I'll also be up around Newcastle before then, so if
I'm running on time and there's enough light I'll drop into Singleton and
take photos of that darned Sundial. It's the World's largest you know!

Another idea struck me as a possibility... The Martin/Molloy Seven Wonders

Okay this post inspired me and I went running off to the spare room
and pulled out the ....... BIG Box of photos :) so far I have
found a piccy of the big whale in Eucla SA, the big Red Lobster in
Kingston SA, and the Big golden Guitar in Tamworth and a picture of a
really big man who was at the time being built or repaired I have no
idea where this was however my educated guess would be SA, however I
soon got distracted by more thatn one old memory and boy did we have
some shocking taste in clothes and hair :) so my search of all things
big ended when I was interupted by guests and I had to stuff all the
photos back into the box which was a job in it's self let alone
shoving the Big box under! everything else in the full cupboard. :)
I know I have seen the big banana, orange, pineapple, ant hmmm I know
I'm forgetting some whenever we see anyhting Big we always take a
picture so I should be able to find some more :)

At least they replied to me the same day i sent it and whithin the hour!
I'm still somewhat... amused by the response. I was asking about comedy
and received a response that made me laugh so perhaps i achieved
something... maybe..

Okay... I've only now done the obligatory search for other pages, working on
the logic that any self-respecting site which is in any way devoted to Big
Things in Australia will mention The Big Merino at the very least. I've
found the following.

http://www2.eis.net.au/~acarr/bigthings/index.html
http://www.cottay.net/bigthings/
http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cabana/5452/bigthings1.htm
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~arundell/bigthing.htm
http://www.johnlaws.com/cause/inbig.html

None of these are really what I'm trying to do... although the ozemail
hosted one comes close.

As I said before, my concept is for part List of Big Things in Australia,
part Traveller's Guide to Big Things in Australia. Having seen attempts at
ratings, I've gone off that idea... but each entry really should have:

* A *good* photo of The Big Thing, preferably without typical holiday snap
poses. I understand why people take those photos, but remember... the site
idea is about The Big Thing, not someone's holiday. :)
* Description of The Big Thing.
* Background of The Big Thing
* A full "How To Get To" The Big Thing
* Description of Facilities in and around The Big Thing, including a short
mention of anything else worth looking at in the area.

Yep and I can provide a photo of *The Big Whale*. It's at Kinka Beach
which is an area of Yeppoon.

From memory its between the pie shop and the town on the left as you
go from Macquarie Pass (or is that Macca's Pass?)

I don't think it's an old tank as it is a bit lumpy though it isn't
that big either.

Yes... I think I've started to remember it now.

On this topic I visited the World's Largest Sundial in Singleton for the
second time yesterday. It hasn't changed in four years. :) We were on our
way back from the spectacular Barrington Tops though and it was dark, so I
didn't take a picture or even read the attached plaques.

I'll be back there soon though as I have to go to Muswellbrook for work one
day this week. Lucky me. :)

From Macquarie Pass it is on the right, in the middle of town.

I know, I live there. Yep, Robert Robinson of Robertson, gets a lot of
laughs. :)

It's big for a spud at about 3m tall!

A 3m spud, you'd get a lot of fries from that.
Are you the 3 RRR's that the teaching profession talks of.

Close. I left teaching not long after finishing my degree, and now work in
the area of the 3 W's. :)

My dream come true is when TV and web truly become one. Can you imagine, no more
- "I missed "X-Files" last night, what happened?" All you'd have to do is
download it and watch it when you want. Then I wouldn't have to organise my life
around my TV viewing habits and my social life is re-born. It could even mean my
work could move into the realm of TV. Now that would be fun - and I'd have
plenty to post in this ng!

Cheers,

Robert

I suggest getting a VCR -- much cheaper in the long run. :) If you watch
a lot (like I do), get two. I used to laugh at a friend who did this but
now that I've done it I can go out on Mondays and Saturdays without great
angst over what I'm missing. I'm generally about a week behind everyone
else but I do still get to watch stuff.

Cheers,
Geoff.

True, but sometimes you don't realise when you leave home that you won't be back in
time to catch whatever it is you want to watch. Other times, dopes like me just
plain forget!

I'm at the stage of laughing at you now (no offence meant - and I ain't really
laughing, just borrowing your phrase). I like tv, but there isn't enough good stuff
on and I rarely have to tape one channel while I watch another. Although, I must
admit, if I'm going out on a Saturday night it would be nice to tape "The Bill" and
"The Pretender", but I can miss either without being too worried. But who knows,
with more channels coming with digi tv and pay tv, in five years time we may need a
bank of VCRs. :) Then, we'll probably never get time to watch them anyway. :)

Cheers,

Robert

Ah but Robert, you can do that already. It's called a video ;-)

Nah, Bob's always sounded like a totally different name to me. Robert or Rob
are my preferences. If you want to start a flame war call me Robbo. I've
restrained myself once so far in this group, cos I didn't want to ruin the
atmosphere in here. :)
