GORDON Ramsay's "lesbian" attack on Tracy Grimshaw has opened the door
to rumours about his sexuality, sparked by a toilet arrest in 1993.
Ramsay apologised unreservedly to the Channel 9 presenter this morning
for "inappropriate and offensive" comments he made about her over the
weekend, after facing a barrage of criticism led by PM Kevin Rudd.
The celebrity chef's own private life has been the subject of
unfounded gossip and innuendo since he was arrested in a London public
toilet 16 years ago.
Ramsay's alleged mistress, Sarah Symonds, yesterday confirmed she had
been repeatedly confronted with questions about the chef's sexuality.
"I think it's a little big of him to be calling other people out,
because those rumours have been going out about him,'' Symonds told
the Herald Sun yesterday.
"I think it will come back and bite him on the arse, no pun intended."
Last Monday, Ramsay took aim at a male member of his audience at his
show, branding him a homosexual after bringing him up on stage to
sample his cooking.
The man, a chef from the Mornington Peninsula, was ridiculed by Ramsay
for wearing a similar shirt to his own.
"Mate you and I have got something going on,’’ Ramsay said before
simulating anal sex on the young chef to roaring laughter from the
crowd.
"Apart from taking it up the a--- what do you do?’’ Ramsay said.
Ramsay was arrested with two other male chefs in a public toilet at
London's Green Park Tube station in March 1993 and cautioned for gross
indecency.
He insisted at the time that the friends were merely larking around in
the toilet after a night of heavy drinking and "nothing sexual''
occurred.
"One of them was having a pee in the sink. The other one was running
around with his trousers around his ankles,'' his spokeswoman said.
"Gordon was actually just at a urinal with his head slumped on the
wall.''
While Symonds dismisses the rumours that followed the incident, Ramsay
does have form for questioning other people's sexuality.
"He once called me a lipstick lesbian after I'd cut my hair short,''
Symonds said.
"Maybe it's something he likes to throw around, maybe he does hate
women."
Veteran TV host Grimshaw was forced to publicly deny she was gay
following a weekend outburst by Ramsay, who has four children with
wife Tana.
The chef's rant has generated mass coverage in the UK, accelerated by
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's description of the star as a "low life''.
Peers yesterday also lined up to slam Ramsay, saying he would leave
Australia feeling like the trip was a job well done.
Legendary London chef Marco Pierre White, who has been involved in a
long-running feud with Ramsay, said the Grimshaw attack was all part
of his rival's act.
"He thinks by shocking people that he attracts attention on himself,
so in many ways he's got everything he wants,'' Marco told the Herald
Sun.
"If you took away the rudeness and the outlandish comments, what's
left? Very little.
"I'd be shocked if they said he was polite. I'd be shocked if he said
something intelligent.''
He added: "Before he criticises someone else's looks I think he should
look at himself in the mirror.
"He looks like a cross between Patrick Swayze and a ventriloquist's
dummy.
"He's not beautiful, let's be honest, and when you start criticising a
lady about what she looks like, it's very ungraceful behaviour.''
London chef Marcus Wareing, who fell out with Ramsay over their joint
London restaurant Petrus, said the controversy would not bother his
former friend.
"He doesn't dwell on people's thoughts about him, he doesn't dwell on
the past, you can't take that away from him,'' Wareing told the Herald
Sun.
"He'll surf that wave in Australia right now and he's going to make
the biggest bang you can imagine.
"Then he'll get on that plane, he'll leave the aftermath of
destruction behind, then go on to the next thing.''
