It is only SVGA resolution (800 x 600) and not widescreen.
This is not good enough even for SDTV. Why? Because of the pixellation
effects and the use of only part of the screen on 16:9 picture..
The same picture will look much better on an XGA (1280x 768) projector.
And the price of $3999 is not cheap.
But, it does have a good lamp life, at 3000 hours and is otherwise a
reasonable projector with excellent contrast when new.

If you can afford it go for a widescreen projector - with a good lamp life.
Philips, the manufacturer of most of the lamps, know how to extend the life
of their lamps, so their latest projectors have around 6000 hours lamp life.
Avoid any that say 1000 hrs.
Lamp life is related to:
(a) cooling of the lamp envelope
(b) control of the current as it heats up
(c) current increase as it ages.
This is why small projectors have a small lamp life -their power supply
cannot provide the extra current needed as the lamp ages and their cooling
fans are inadequate for the extra cooling needed.

also have a look at the sony hs10 and the panasonic ae300 (both lcd's
however)

I had all these 3 projectors lined up not long ago, and I would rank them as
follows:

1. sony hs10
2. panasonic ae300
3. infocus x1

also I noticed the rainbow problem on the infocus, so I'm sure it has a slow
daisy wheel (probably only 1x or 2x). The panasonic has some technology that
eliminates the lcd screendoor problem, but I wasn't able to see any screen
door on the sony either, so I don't think there's much to the panasonic
technology in that respect (probably just defocus slightly)

you can get the HS10 from pricejapan for about $4500 I think...

hth..

Well there are always 2 sides to every story.
I decided I wanted to buy a new home theatre projector so I did a couple of
months research on the net and did some demo's at a few places.
On the net the best 2 sites I have found are

http://www.projectorcentral.com for reviews,specs & FAQ's.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ for forum type comments and info - very
good for all home theatre

After much debate it came down to the X1 versus the Sanyo PLV-Z1

The X1 is native 4:3 and the Z1 native 16:9. Both of course can be switched
to do either with some loss of resolution.
Best pricing I could get in Brisbane was $4300 for X1 and $3900 for Z1.
(incls. GST)
I actually preferred the X1 anyway as the DLP technology is more fluid that
the LCD and you don't get screendoor but do get pixelation if you get too
close. For both these viewing should be 2 times the width of your screen.
Mine screen is 1.8m wide.
Once I got the X1 all I can say is "awesome !!!!"
You can't beat it for the price.
Its HDTV is amazing and DVD's are impressive too.
The only issue is if you can see the "rainbow effect" as the colour wheel
is only 2x. However no one that has watched my movie nights has seen it. I
would highly recommend a demo though as if you are in the 10% of people who
can it can wreck the whole experience.
As for any other projectors be careful as this is brand new 12 degree
mirror technology from Texas instruments and I have seen projectors worth
$10,000 with not as good picture quality. There are certainly better ones
out there than the X1 but just because they are more expensive they may not
be better.
Make sure you read the recommended projectors at projectorcentral.com. They
certainly will give you a detailed analysis.
Interestingly the HS10 has dropped off the list as there are now better
projectors out there and there have been alot of lamp failures with the
HS10's too.
Anyway just my 2 cents worth.
Good luck whatever you buy.

Regards
Ewen Cameron
