Well, they did it to Melb viewers last week and they have done it again this
week.

NO 5.1 Audio as promised

Any other states getting Star Wars in 5.1 ?

No, not in Brisbane either. We're used to the DBA guide lying about
what we will get. I've had my HD setup for 5 weeks now - but I've
never seen *any* HD here in Brisbane - not even the 9 or 10 loops.
(Channel 4+3 loop is shown here but doesn't count).

The only DD audio we get is on the ABC and even then it is only giving 2
channels (but it does sound better than all the other channels).

It is only after I've got all the new gear that I have learn't about the
state of digital TV in Australia. Boy it is a depressing debacle -
particularly the HD situation.

Yeah I think Sydney are the only ones who got it.

but I did notice that the widescreen.info guide said

"Australian Television Networks
Metropolitan Widescreen & High Definition Digital Program Schedule for June
2003"

We will have to wait and see

I recorded the movie on my Pioneer DVD recorder but Sydney was only
coming through DPL according to my Denon receiver from the FTA stream.
Sounded OK when I replayed it but sounded nothing like the LD version I
have. It was certainly only DPL as the rears were single channel. I
suppose we'll have to wait another month to see if anything changes on
July 1...

Mmm - how was the playback quality of the recording compared to the LD?
Upconverted SD must be slightly better than the LD yes?

I have the LD's but no DVD recorder yet and was wondering if anybody would
record to DVD. Shame about the sound only being DPL - but current DVD
recorders can only record in DPL correct (not 5.1)?

Yes,

The video was far superior to the LD. I may have been a bit hasty in my
statement that the transmission was DPL. I have been testing with the
receiver today on the 9 HD loop and it is DD 5.1. Seems I recorded on
the SD channel as I checked the receiver during recording last night,
on the TV input setting and not the DVD output, and it was reporting
DPL whereas today is is reporting DD 5.1 on the HD loop. May have been
my error.

I've only upgraded in the last three weeks and am still coming to terms
with the processes involved though the recording process is a piece of
cake. Even at ML16 (2 hours 50 minutes on the disc) on the Pioneer, to
fit the movie on a single sided DVD-RW the video was as good as the FTA
stream (albeit upconverted SD as you say). I'll check on the recorder
audio capabilities/restrictions with some test recording on the 9 HD
loop and get back to you to confirm if it only does DPL. Cheers...

DB,

Did some recording tests and, yes, the recorder is DPL only. This even
though the doco says that the audio compression method is Dolby
Digital.

I have no issue with DPL only as the high end VCR it replaced was the
same. The video quality, convenience and ease of use are the main
desires. If I wanted to copy DVD movies I can do that on my PC which
has a DVD-R and the required software - for backup purposes only of
course. Cheers...

No DVD recorders are capable of recording DD5.1. I have heard that they can
record DD2.0 but thats it.
