I don't have a VCR in the cabinet where this is to go, just one in the kids
room, so I was thinking of getting a combo unit that can play DVD-R as well
play the occasional Video Tape.
If it helps formulate your response I have the Rank Arena 86Cm and a Marantz
5200 I think it is, not sure what inputs I have left but I imagine that this
will have to run S-Video+Stere RCAs as I think I am all out of higher
inputs.

DVD-R MINUS is the movie format. DVD-R PLUS is the data format. The new SONY
DVD-R +/- does both.
You could cable the VCR back into the masthead and watch it on the main tv
whilst keeping it in the other room.
How long is that drill bit ?
Yes, DVD-R is accepted by the forum. Yes, Philips initially launched DVD+R
as data format. However, we both know there's a lot more to this now.

The Sony is a good bet though.

Known as DVD-R and DVD+R just to be petty. :-)
Is the OP actually asking about the combination units that have a DVD and a
VHS player in the one box?
I don't have one of these units but have only seen them from such brands as
LG, etc at relatively low prices so would be inherently suspicious.

They have actually come down. the same LG and Samsung units used to
sell for around $700. I think the proices have dropped to a reasonable
price now, considering you can buy a separate DVD for $100 and stereo
VCR for around $250.
No, I dont have one, but will be getting one soon for the bedroom and
the caravan.
The advantage of this type of unit, is only 1 set of inputs to plug
into the TV (great for what I want, as not going thru an amp)
For the original poster, if running thru and amp, and ya have the
inputs, separate components would be better, as you can upgrade 1 unit
without the other.

Generally, combo units (of anything) are a compromise. You get a mediocre
DVD player coupled with a mediocre VCR My personal choice would be to get
seperate units. Sony makes a DVD player that handle both DVD-R and DVD+R.
I remember the Philips 733K being very flexible too.
Having said that, I believe Toshiba make a combo unit too.

One need not purchase more equipment if what one has can be used on all the
TV's in the house.

I don't know if this will affect your setup or not, but only the composite
inputs actually pass thru the VHS and DVD signal; ie you still have to run a
seperate set of cables if you want s-video or component picture for DVD
playback
But it depends on the unit
Both have component, S-Video, and composite video.
The LG unit had S-video labeled under DVD-only
The Samsung unit had on the box 'psuedo S-video from VCR'. Buy this I
gather it 'converts' the VCR composite output to the S-video outlet,
so ya only have to have a s-video lead (if TV supports S-video)
Both units had mixed pro-logic output, as well as 5.1 (think both had
optic and coax)
