When should I look at having these seviced ?
Some suggest every 12 months...but just wondering if there's also number of
dives I should base this on too ??
BC
The main issue with dive kit is lack of thorough cleaning after diving.
the bladder of a BCD can harbour germs and viral infections, so I clean
mine with dilute Milton fluid (a hyperchlorite solution used to
sterilise babies feeding bottles).
Damage to O rings and seals is commonly caused by allowing salt water to
evaporate leaving behind salt crystals which are highly abrasive.
Simply rinsing is not enough. I fully immerse and flush my equipment in
a water bath for at least an hour, preferably overnight, before rinsing
a few times with clean tap water. This allows to salt to be dissolved
and rinsed away.
I follow this with sterilisation, as above.
If your kit is unused for several months, then a re-sterilisation is
recommended before use. I know of a few divers (mainly in warm
countries) that found various animals & insects nesting in their
equipment after a long lay-off. The worst of these were spiders and
cockroaches in regulator mouthpieces and rebreather loops!
Unless you need to service your kit to comply with continued
manufacturers warranty conditions (such as the limited lifetime warranty
from Oceanic), I personally think that 20 dives is a very small number
to require any form of service.
