In response to the restrictions imposed by the novel coronavirus, the Ocean Corporation, Houston’s underwater welding, commercial diving, and non-destructive testing vocational school is running classes online to keep its commitment to its students, and to an industry looking to meet the increasing need for qualified divers, welders, and NDT inspectors, including Drone and ROV operators.
"Our first concern is the health and safety of our students, instructors, and staff," says John Wood, President. "At the same time there are segments of the industry still in operation, infrastructure still in use, and industry just waiting to come back online, and the skills we teach will be in huge demand." In addition, existing student demand, the disruption of the economy and workforce caused by the pandemic will lead many to seek career changes, and vocational education in high-demand fields will be an important part. In a study performed by Georgetown University, the Ocean Corporation ranks 9th (out of 4,500 schools) in the nation for graduate earning potential for the ten-year period after graduation.
While classroom instruction can be handled online, practical, hands-on elements including welding and diving will be scheduled in small groups to maintain social distancing practices. "Obviously," Says Mike Oden, Dean, "the nature of the training and education we provide requires a lot of hands-on training time. We are committed to continuing to provide that training in as safe and effective a manner as possible."
