Perce the Bored.
Do they have to be "top" players, you might run out of numbers.
How about first graders?
John Elias springs to mind.
Craig Coleman came real close.
Perce did say top level players, not top players.

You could ask the poms for a few. Ryan Bailey and Chev Walker anyone?
You trying to take my moniker of pedant of the year?
Joe Kilroy
The bloke who got mixed up with Warren Fellows? His name eludes me at the
second.
And that forward who played for Manly last year. Gary someone?

There's some good reading there. I had a bit of a chuckle when I saw
Terry Jenner on the list. Oh, the irony of his unwavering belief that
Murali is a fraud.

A couple of Dragons got done for arms dealing. Michael Beattie & John Elias
from memory.

Surely the Dragons can't claim Elias. He was Souths, wasn't he?
I'm thinking there was a third player involved in that, too.

Forgot about that one. The Jets had quite a crew through that 70's period.
Add Paul Hayward to the other two.
Wasn't Brad Izzard a cop and crashed a car pissed as a fart and another cop
was killed? Did he do time for that?
* Paul Hayward???? - Jets half - (drug dealing)
* Kev Yow Yeh - Redcliff, then Balmain (rape, IIRC)
* Nev Hornery - Berries, then Wynnum-Manly - may have done time (thieving)
* Fortitude-Valley-2nd rower-whose name-utterly-escapes-me (Shame, shame,
shame considering I was a Diehards supporter) who also played for Qld
pre-SoO (armed robbery, IIRC, and *before* he played A-grade!)
I'll think further on this....
CP
Eric Grothe, Paul Mares for insurance fraud.
Eels fans in general for burning down Cumberland Park.
Suspect you are correct, Mr George. Buggered if I can remember who. I may

Sharkenheimer: can you recall the NZ (and I think, Auckland-based) rl player
who got incarcerated yeeeeeers ago fer murder?
He may have been a cop at one stage, altho' - IIRC - the fella's footy
club (rather than the cops) was the focus of the animosity.
IIRC again, the case involved a member of the Mongrel Mob being
bashed/kicked to death.
CP

Also banned from the clubhouse of every club he played with and was up
on numerous assault charges as well as theft...

Not forgetting Ross Strudwick, Henry Hollaway and another....shagging
the front rowers (can't think of his name ...tall, rangy, mad as a meat
ant...wait that is most of them..was it not Al McInnes?) little 13 year
old sister. He promptly beat the shit out of all three and caused
Valleys tons of grief (he was their best player, Struddy the captain and
Holloway the Coach...they got off on a community service order I
think..Holloway did time for thieving from Wynnum club too, I believe
and Bob Bax, Norths coach, for being an SP Bookie, stealing and
recieving stolen goods...Mal Meningas brother for that disgraceful rape
(hang the prick I say)...
Could have a decent team then!

There was a third one who was a stagon or draint. Wasn't Elias trialling?
Court joke goes here.

Having trouble with this one.
There was an incident 60s/70s where there was a stabbing/killing at a party
in Wellington. The result was that the whole club was banned from the comp.
The clubs name was something like Eastern. That's about all I can remember.
Google no help.

Chris Caruana, ex Norths & Souths is another to do time.
Brad Izzard wasn't the cop, it was his brother Craig (ex Parra, Illawarra)
who was. Brad was pissed & drove his car off a bridge coming back from a
golf club. The cop killed was a very senior one too.

Hang on, Brad played for Penrith didn't he? I'm sure I read about him
being the one that had to rock up to the Alexander house and tell them
the bad news about Ben.
Natalie
Might have been his brother Craig.
>

Did he play for Penrith? Was a RLW article I am channelling, and Brad
was definately the more 'famous' of the two. His wife, IIRC, was also a
cop (that is a tad fuzzier though).
Natalie
Well since no-one else has dared to play the racist I'll step up:
"Smokin" Joe Kilroy would be a shoe-in on the wing in any jailbird XIII.
Cheers
LT.
Half the Eastern Suburbs team (Wellington NZ) were jailed back in the
70's(?) for bashing a gang member to death. I think the latter provoked
his own demise. One of them was Whare Henry who had prior form
for the Kiwis.

No Brad worked for Telstra. Craig Izzard was indeed a police officer
though (formerly Railway Police but at some stage integrated into the
NSW Police). I think Brad served two or three years for it.
paul

No that was Craig. I think he'd left Penrith and was playing for
Balmain at the time, but the Izzard and Alexander families of course
were closely connected. He certainly wasn't in the 1991 Penrith squad.
Alexander was killed midway through the '92 season.

Raiders rookie Nathan Smith (six tries in five first grade appearances) can
be added to the list. Oh dear.

League star on exposure charge
August 8, 2004
UP-and-coming Canberra winger Nathan Smith has been charged with wilful
obscene exposure and resisting arrest after an early morning incident in
Sydney's Kings Cross.
Canberra officials today confirmed Smith had been arrested and charged only
hours after scoring a try in his side's 20-14 loss to Newcastle at
EnergyAustralia Stadium last night.
The Raiders will launch an investigation into the matter tomorrow.
"We will be doing our own investigation tomorrow morning," chief executive
Simon Hawkins said.
"I haven't heard his side of it, but obviously it's disappointing. We will
have to have a look at it in the morning, have a chat to the player and
discuss a course of action from there."
Police confirmed a 21-year-old Canberra man had been released on bail and
would appear before Downing Centre Local Court on August 25.
Smith has been one of the shining lights of an otherwise disappointing
season for the Raiders.
The rookie winger scored two tries in his first grade debut against North
Queensland earlier this year and was promptly signed by the Raiders to a new
two-year deal.
He scored his sixth try from five first grade appearances during his side's
defeat at Newcastle, a loss which dropped the Raiders out of the top eight.

I think you will find there were two accidents.
I'm not sure what order they were in but I believe Alexander was the driver
in an accident with Mark Geyer (I think) as passenger, Ben was killed. I
think that Ben just went too fast and rear ended a truck.
In the other one Brad Izzard was the driver and went off the road at or near
a bridge killing a passenger (the police officer).
That's my recollection, but could be wrong.
I was trying to remember the article I read all those years ago and
which one was the cop. The incident in question you mention below I knew
nothing of and isn't relevant to me searching the reaches of my mind for
a name.

Was Luke Goodwin according to his Dad in a recent RLW article (that I
*do* remember).

Natalie
I can't find anything in the search engines, funny that as there was a heap
written about both incidents at the time. I suppose being a couple of years
before the WWW might have something to do with it.
From memory I am sure that Ben was driving and I think Geyer was in the car
with him, Ben just plain ran up the back of a truck.
The one with the cop was the Izzard crash and I thought there were four
occupants in that car that ran off the road killing the officer.
