Remember this one well. The Door was 'showing the ball' and
never saw Izzard coming.

Ron Gibbs for Easts V St. George, on Mick Beattie I think
My favourite though - Gavin Jones (Norths) on Geoff Bugden
(Parra) c. 1986. Despite Bugden being 100+ kg, he also did the
spinning in mid air thing. Jones also got a good one in on
Pricey in this game.

What are the biggest hits you guys have ever seen in RL.
A few that I remember include...

Brad Izzard on Benny Elias in 88 (huge shot where Elias nearly performed a
complete mid air 360)

Mark Carroll on Ian ROberts 1990 (2 massive hits from the then Souths giant,
in fact those 2 tackles were the sole reason Carroll played for his country
that year.

Wally Lewis on Darrell Williams 1989 (Lewis probably got his back for the
way he was treated in that series - Brendon Tuuta took it apon himself to
decapitate the king)

Peter Johnson on many opponents (Peter Johnson was probably the most
consistant hitter in the game)

Joe Vagana on Matty Johns (A bit of a mis-match, but Joe certainly conected
with Johns during last years Anzac test)

A never saw the Harrigon hit on Ian Lucas & appearently Terry Randell pulled
off a couple of good shots in his time.

Peter Coyne on a trybound Brett Rodwell in a semi final in 92 ( I think),
dhoulder charged the centre over the touch in goal.
Or the Ricky walford special in one of the city country games where he
dragged Mark Lyons over the touch in gaol line!

gollywog (6' 7"?) - launched himself like a spear - hit Trudget in the

Was on the lead in for Seven's Big League from then on. Never seen such a

The biggest hit I think I've ever seen was Zinzan Brooke vs a NSW Waratah -
I think it may hve been Rod Kafer. Zinny poleaxed him.

In rugby league circles I have seen many, but none really stand out. Mrtin
Lang and Dane Carla had a bit of a 'how do you do' on Sunday. Of course some
of those Origin hits are very memorable.

I remember in about 1995 or 1996, Peter Ryan hit a Souths player at ANZ and
it shook the foundations. The Souths player took ages to get up. Ryan was
one of the biggest hitters in the modern era. Too bad he had to follow it up
with an elbow to the head like he did to one hapless Gold Coast player. Ex
Golden Gloves boxing champ was Ryan...........tough prick.

I also think Lewis on Williams and the running battles between Carroll &
Harrigan and also Gillespie.

The hit Sailor put on the Balmain centre last year when he stopped a try
scoring movement also was huge. I think the guy only got up off the ground
the other day. LOL.

Hi all

Peter Spring pulled off an absolute gem on a player from the former St
George club.

The well known ones as pointed out in the first post all stand out.
Also, Haumono got Mick Hancock with a gem in 97. About a thousand
Laurie Daley tackles.

Best hitters I've seen (as in did it many times...)

Peter Spring
Peter Kelly
Peter Johnstone
David Gillespie
Laurie Daley

Another Souths one. Mark McGaw hit two Roosters and they both went off.
Can't remember the year or the two players. Anybody?

Was this the shoulder/bodycheck about midfield cause I thought it was
Tuuta that he hit big that year but myabe I was wrong. The best part
about it was that King Wally acted as if it took no effort (and it
looked like it didn't as well) and stood over the guy waiting for him
to return to earth. Truly one of the most memorable.

On the other hand Williams himself was not shy in coming forward -
especially with his shoulder. Must have been 1990 or there abouts
when Manly was playing Easts and one Jeff Orford - a rather well build
winger for East was at the and of a backline movement and going for
the corner. Traditionalists would have like Williams (playing
fullback) to have cut him down round the legs and drag him into touch
or go for a ball and all tackle to hold him up but I much prefer
Willaims shoulder charge. For a moment there Mascot was picking up an
UFO around about the Bondi area. Honestly Orford *flew* into the
sideline cameraman and then proceeded into the sheds to 'freshen up'
after a turbulent flight.

None of you will probably care, but in ESL some of the hits are huge. In any
derby matches, they are huge, but there are two tackles which stick out in
my mind. 2 weeks ago we had this fat person, run into Vila Matautia at full
belt. The guy ended up on his arse. Then, there is the Freddie Tuilagi
tackle, probably the biggest hitter in ESL. Against Wakefield, I think, he
"launched" himself at this player, crunched him, and the player flew a good
five metres back and ended up on his backside, boy you could feel that one
on the terraces.

Allan Langer on Kurt Sorenson in the World Cup final.

I met Langer the day before at the races and talked to him. He was
with Don Furner, Bullfrog, A. Farrar, G Jack, etc. I heard that Kurt
had told the Kiwis that he felt Langer had a weakness in defense if
you ran straight at him. Langer had that habit of trying to break his
leg in tackles IIRC :-)

Sorenson took a ball 30 metres from the line, at full speed and ran
straight at Langer, clearly intending to put Langer's front on style
to the test.

Langer nailed him full frontal and bought him down in a heap.

If you look really hard at the tape you will see Kurt get up from the
tackle, play the ball and stand there afterwards in disbelief.

Classic stuff.

Another good'un was "Awhiska"

Beat me to it!

Not that particular tackle, but Charlie Frith generally (played for
Valleys: must be good).

He damn near killed a few people. The one that brought him to
everyone's attention was a horrible shoulder-charge on some poor Wests
bugger (can't remember his name at present - Bill Clohessy?) which
resulted in the guy losing about 11 teeth!

Said hello to him at the Souths concert earlier this year, still looking
very fit, and hasn't shrunk at all. Have to be close to the biggest guy to
play the game.... huge man!

I used love the way he'd stand in the defensive line, legs wide arms
outstretched, from there he'd lurch to whatever side the runner took, you'd
need an octuplet side-step and a cut lunch to run 'round him.

I'll never forget Dallas Donelly (I think) from Wests picking him up for the
dump, teetering and then collapsing under him at Redfern. I'll never forget
that game... (I know I've told this story before - but don't worry, I will
again!)

If Charlie Frith wasn't the biggest ever to play the game, I'd say it would
be Mick Madsen. Check out the photo of him tackling Frank Curran on p.59 of
the Pride of the League book, taking note of the size of Mick's forearm and
hand.

Obviously I never saw him play (40-50 years before my time), but my dad met
him after he stopped playing football and reckons he was massive. None of
the gym muscle of today's players, just from hard work in the field.
