Sorry to drag this topic up again but I was going through the
bookshelves and happened to flick through Malcolm Andrews' "ABC of
Rugby League". Edwin "Nigger" Brown was given the following write up:

"Edwin Brown's nickname would, for obvious reasons, never be
countenanced today. The name had nothing to with the colour of Brown's
skin. It came about because of his snappy dressing and penchant for
wearing deep brown shoes. This colour was known in the shoe shops as
'nigger brown'."

Don't know if this came out in the original discussions. He must have
been a pretty good centre as Wigan tried to sign him for 1000 pounds
and 7 pound a match. Not bad money in 1922.

So the name had nothing to do with the colour of his skin, but plenty to do
with the colour of a lot of other people's.

A perfect example of applying the morals of the present to the
practices of the past.

It's what the do-gooders of today spend time on when they can't find a
current cause to champion.

I recall very few people saying that it was a racial nickname. But the word
"nigger" is offensive to a hell of a lot of people. It's perfectly
understandable to complain about the name.

Cheers

No matter how hard we try though we can't change what happened in the past.

Sure, but it probably does a lot more bad than good to try to perpetuate it.
Surely it could be called the "Edwin Brown" stand without the nickname.

I agree. It's the people who want to beat the issue into something a lot
greater that I disagree with.

Furthermore, "Big Boss" lolly cigars used to have a red tip like a real one.

(Real cigar, that is. Only whitefolk have a red tip on anything else...)

fascinating insight:

Reminds me of those cigarette lookalike lollies you could get that
used to be called Fags. They changed the name to Fads.
Buggered if I know why (pun intended).

I reckon that when enough people are against it, they'll vote with their
feet and the TRL or whoever is responsible will change the name. Can't see
how it affects many people anyway, it's not like it's a stand at Telstra
Stadium or anything. But then, if it was, the name would definitely have
changed by now. I don't like it, but I've never been to the stadium, and it
wouldn't personally offend me anyway.
