Whilst reading MG's Autobiograohy "Rugby League Rebel", I noticed that Geyer
names Debs in a Media team of who he thought treated him badly during his
career. Among other journos are Roy Masters and Ray Chesterton. Debs - any
words on this 'feud' or why Geyer dislikes you? He put you at standoff in
the "Media Maulers" team, you are up against Wally Lewis in "Geyer's
Avengers". Your inside pairing is with Lisa Olsen.

Yeah, I remember that. Lisa's gone back to the US now, so she's
unavailable for selection :-)

It was no big deal really Sam, it was just a list of journos who'd
been critical of him. I was stunned to make the team given the number
of contenders.

I think I wrote a column bagging him after his silly carry-on in that
Origin game v Lewis.

The best story of those who criticised Geyer though was Paul Kent's
(now with the SMH)

He was writing for the Sun-Herald same time as me and he really got
stuck into Geyer - calling for him to be dropped to reserves until he
learnt some discipline.

Paul had been a lower grader with Norths and Parra and when he dropped
out of professional footy to pursue a journalism career, he played in
the Central Coast comp.

As some might remember, when Geyer was ditched by Balmain several
years ago, he finished off the season playing for Ourimbah (?) on the
Central Coast.

So Paul actually did have to play against Geyer. And Geyer didn't miss
him - even in the lead-up to the game, the word was all around the
Coast that he was going to make Paul pay for what he'd written about
him.

Paul's built like Brett Kimmorley, so you can imagine how much he
looked forward to running into "The Towering Inferno" on-field.

He said his only option when he first got the ball was just to run
straight at Geyer. He said he'd rather take him head-on than have him
come in as the 2nd man in a tackle.

He ended up with a couple of black eyes, very bruised and sorry, but at
least Geyer apparently felt the issue had been resolved and the
animosity was laid to rest.

The rest of us never had to actually front the guy on the field. I've
always had respect for Paul. He showed he was prepared to deal with
the consequences of what he wrote - although he certainly didn't have
to.

Sorry to rant on with a long story (again) but I've always loved that
yarn.

nothing surprises me. everyone knows second rate journalists have to get
stuck into great players because it makes them feel like they are worth
something.

It was Umina, he actually was the only player to get paid by them that year.
Unfortunately with the extremely large crowds, the guy on the gate couldn't
help himself, or more appropriately, did help himself and the club hardly
saw a cent of the gate takings.

I thought Kyle's post said a lot... you know...about second rate people get
stuck into other people to make themselves feel better and all that.

Saw that; I was left with a bit of a "so what?" feeling. It hardly
seemed relevant to today's situation.

Who *is* Pops McDonald, anyway? (Ex-union player, I gather, but...)
