Heading: Praise for a rugby league hero

On a trip to The Entrance, a couple of the children noticed rugby
league player Brad Clyde. The children wanted his autograph and he
could not have been more obliging. I know there has been some bad
press but with ambassadors like Clyde, children will keep their
heroes.

Sender: Brendon O'Reilly, West Ryde.

***********************

It just shows what great people are within the Canterbury club and
it shows what a great player, person and signing Bradley Clyde has
been.

Take a bow Brad and well done for putting a smile on the kids faces
and making their time at The Entrance even more special.

If a Brendon O'Reilly reads this, thanks for portraying a positive
image to our players in the game today. Most of the players are good
citizens, wrecked by a few louts, hooligans and big mouths.

It's very fortunate the young children that it was Clyde they
spotted, who is one of the best and most friendly people in the game
and always there help anyone.

Regards,
Matthew.

I read that article too. I think we often forget that the vast majority of
players are like this. Quite a few Knights players live in my area and my
little brother was going around selling raffle tickets (and asking for
players' autographs when he came across one of their houses) - most players
he asked bought raffle tickets (which were to raise funds to help out a
local set of triplets with a crippling genetic disease) and all of them
obliged to an autograph when asked - at their front door. It's great to know
that our RL players are thinking of their fans.

Nice to hear that some of the Knights are acting decent. Of course, I
could tell you about the rumour I heard about a player who told a young
girl to "fuck off" when she asked for his autograph in a restaurant. He
must've been part of the minority you didn't mention.

Daley's a gem, isn't he?

My 9 year-old who's in the Bulldogs cheersquad met me after the
Canberra game at Stadium Aus. this year absolutely bubbling with
enthusiasm for Lozza.

Apparently she'd walked passed him in the tunnel and recognised him
from the Tv ads he's been in (she's still not paying much attention to
the games, unfortunately). She said "Hello Laurie Daley" and
apparently he stopped and said hello and had a little chat with her.

She came away from the game proud as punch saying that Laurie Daley
was her friend, and she always stops to watch when there's anything
invovling him on TV.

With kids that age it really doesn't take much to encourage them, and
Daley knows how to do it with such ease.

Laurie is good, I give him that, he be in the top branch of players
along with Clyde, Price, Norton, Hetherington and Lockyer.

I like McLinden the best from Canberra as a person and Wiki second
though, they are really good people and have taken after Clyde in
that regard of people respect.

Matthew.

Nice story Debs. A mate went to this years GF in Sydney with his old
Dad and I caught up with him on Friday night to ask how the trip
wnent.

He went with the Mad Buthcehers pacakage tour which included Mr Ridge.
I asked his opinion of Mr Ridge as it has been a topic a lot of
pweople in here have comented on.

He told me that on the way home the tour party was held up for a
loooooong time in Sydney airport and everyone was getting a little
scratchy.

A little kid in a St Gilly jumper was seen to approach Mr Ridge and
ask for his autograph. Mr Ridge took a lot of time to talk to the
kiddie, said he was sorry that 'his' team got beat and made sure that
the kiddie got a good autograph with all the trimmings.

My mate was up until that point one of the many Kiwis who have had a
gutsful of Ridge but reckons this little episode showed the real Ridge
as few people really see him and has dramatically changed his opinion
of him.

It reminded me of someone (SiD or Steven perhaps) posting a story
earlier this year that told of Ridge going to see some kid in hospital
while in Sydney and confirms that those who lie and post dishonest
remarks about the man have a hidden agenda or are simply on ahate
campaign fueled by God knows what, probably illicit drugs.

Twas I.

I actually met Ridge in a Pub in Manly .........yonkies years ago now.
He was having a few Beers with Tooves and Frank Stokes.
Brother #6 said ........."oi SiD aint that Ridge"....

Ridgey took timeout from his Beer.........(and anyone who likes a beer knows
how hard it is to walk away from one) and chatted with us for about 15
minutes even got a few pictures taken with him and Toovy.

Ridge is a Legend...........so there.

While rapping players and clubs for community involvement, I'll delve into
the archives of my Sharkies experiences.

In my final year of high school I was in hospital having chemotherapy. I
friend called the club and Gavin Miller came out to visit me, (ET and Mark
Magaw were on the Kangaroo tour). Stayed for a couple of hours and gave me
an autgraphed jumper. He organised Jimmy See to come around to my place for
lunch and visit. Jim gave me his jersey from his first game for the sharks.

I moved to Brisbane and a few years later met the team before a Broncs game
at Lang Park (half time under21s. Miller remembered me and showed me where
Jimmy was in the crowd. He got the team to all sign my jersey. I was
pretty impressed.

It is this kind of thing that makes people big fans of the game, the clubs
and the players. It even makes you staunch in your opinion of the ARL/SL
war.

Go you Sharkies,

Rick

David, do you bear a passing resemblance to Shaun Edwards? Because if you
do, this could explain a few things ;o)
