Weeeee. Here we go, the season's off and running. One thread is debating
the amount of time Lloyd takes to kick for goal and "why that is unfair to
the backline", blah, blah, blah whilst another is starting on the old "the
SAFL and WAFL" were just as important and strong and had as many good
players as the VFL" blah, blah, blah.

All we want now is the "you Vic's have an advantage and should play all your
games interstate ........"

Yep .. we're open for business.

Just for interest, for those that have been here a while, what other debates
get regurgitated every year over and over?

Well...

Depends on how many we lose interstate. Was it 4 years ago when more games

I'd like to see a bunch of Vic swollen heads form a super team all under a
salary cap of $300,000 for the WAFL and $400,000 for the SANFL and no
scwabbles!
Pretty boy Lloyd might be a tallent but I sure he wouldn't play for peanuts!

How long do you think all those guy's in you r super team would stay?
The clash of ego's would soon see it fall apart with "lesser" players as you
call it getting the same pay in other teams. Why do you think brisbane want
their cap higher!
PLAYER RETENTION!
You don't pay, they don't stay!

and what I'm trying to say , is back then all players would have been on X
amounts , as those were the figures paid to players . .So they would have
all stayed after all can you see a saffle or waffle club from then being
able to afford 1 VIC champion let alone 2 .....I think not ..

So your saying in the past all players that played got exactlly the same
amount as every other player in the comp? yes? surely not. or are you
suggesting that the SANFL and WAFL teams continue on their salary caps and
your Vic team pays players the same rate they get paid now?

no what I'm saying is that the VIC players (if it happened) would have
played in those leagues .Back then only the real star plays got the big
dollars ....... players in VIC or other States would have been on similar
money ...not drastically more in VIC ............ Interstaters that came
over , came to play in the best competition and not for the extra $$$$$
unless they were super stars at saffle or waffle level ...........

OK, but your saying all the big stars (on the big dollars!) would be in your
side.
How long before they get offers form the other clubs and get poached (like
the VFL did for years to the SANFL and WAFL)
I say 1 season. All teams would be on salary cap - even playing feild.
Just a matter of time before the sale yards at "Big Vic" are opened up!
It would even up, just as it has in the now AFL.
(Oh sorry, I forgot, "Vics get it hard and never get a break" - Eddie)

errr... what extra advantages?

Like having a few extra pics to get our list up from '0' to 'a squad'?

You guys had equal shot at those players, Kemp made it through to 100. Just
you guys were too Vic-centric to see the talent.

Of course the drafting "no go" zone protecting W.A. players so the
Eagles could get them never existed, did it?

Might have. I cant remember the fine details but i recall a restriction on
WA players for the early round(s?) of the early drafts. So? We wanted WA
boys to play in our team, and its not like you guys were clamouring over
them anyway. You were all already well stocked with Vic & our boys which
you picked up , ironically - free from any interstate leeching.

2 years of it too. A friend of mine had a brother who could have had a
chance at AFL
but the Eagles didn't want him. He went on to captain East Perth and
have a long WAFL career.

That moritorium killed off the hopes of a lot of young WA AFL hopefuls,
as you can imagine.
It's one thing to have the talent, but to actually get noticed and given
a chance was a lot harder
back then. And then to have your options limited to being able to be
drafted by only one team,
is unfair.

It wasn't only the early rounds, it was WA players, full stop. Read up
on it and you will learn that
the Eagles have a huge association with the decline of WA footy.
Quite ironic considering
Toddy's recent whinges. Not that I'm totally against what Toddy is
saying. Vlad the Impaler

David, don't forget the other concessions, especially in 1989 when Indian
Pacific were nearly bust, and it took the WAFC's intervention to bale them
out of monetry trouble, and the VFL to grant two extra pre-draft
concessions, inclucing Gehrig, to make sure the club didn't fold.

Considering population spread and the fact that vic clubs have more eye's on
local clubs there may well be some kids wrongly getting a go where others
not in Vic who are good enough miss out.

A few years back the "West Australian" and local 7 and 9 stations bemoaned
that grassroots footy was doomed because only 2 kids were drafted, unlike
the "glory days" when the Wiggles started up and picked up nearly the entire
U19's champions (the WA boys).

But it's all swings and roundabouts. This year a large group of WA talent
went to the non WA AFL clubs. It has absolutely *nothing* to do with a club
being Victorian.

It's a logical proof; come up with a hypothesis, and you don't try to prove
it, you seek to disprove it. If you can't disprove it, it *might* be
correct. One example disproving a theory is all that's needed.

No, I don't have the stats at hand. But a bit of number crunching of the

I wouldn't call Ando "top quality" but you get your players if they can play
from any where including the lesser State . Thank heaven VIC produces so
much talent that our list has a very % from our great State .

The whole family history is VIC , was in Canberra due to his father going
there for work purposes ........... I'm sure he is very comfortably set up

Well, der. The interesting question was whether he would have been
chosen at all (pick 78, IIRC) if he didn't have the family history with
the club -- a question I've never seen answered...

reconstruction when playing at junior level and was in the age group that
the kids get drafted ...... was always going to be a late draft pick due to

I went back 5 years as I thought we'd go most recent .If it's a history
lesson you want , then that's what you shall have ..

:)

We took in teams from the lesser States as of 1981 with the inception of
Sydney ........

So we have 7 flags from 23 years ...........

Then we took in a further 2 more in 1987 ...............

So we have 7 flags from 18 years ..............

We then took in another in 1991 ..........

So we have 7 flags from 13 years .........

Of those 7 flags only 4 are from genuine footy States and neither of those 2
States have won a flag for 5+ years .........

Brisbane is a bullshit team made up of players from all over (Mainly VIC) &
(including from the lesser States like S.A and W.A) .......It would have won
nothing if it didn't have it's ridiculous salary cap advantages over the

Still, not really good enough for 50% of the competition is it?
Especially as you claim them to be the stronger half. Whichever way you
present the statistics, the best you can manage is even honours.

Which is a win to us. :-P

Only when im pissed. Which was an awful lot last weekend. I came over to
bleak city for the GP and came home with a freaking cold. Any chance you
lot will turn on a warm March some time soon? Rained 3/5 days!

Mind it was good to watch the Saints run all over the Dons at that huge ass
indoor stadium that the League built you guys.

Ah, memories of Gotham flood back, to the short time I lived in Richmond.
"You've gotta see St Kilda, it's the best!" I was told. So I did. And it's
a pale immatation of Fremantle. But at least I worked out why people wear
their team's scarf on Fridays - because it's *fucking* cold!

What dickhead decided to align the goals, so that the sun inconviently
shines off that god-awful city centre and blinds everyone? (That's the odd

Krud seems to have a thing about cultural imperialism. Anyone not from the

Because the tendency is to build houses people want to live in when they
leave Misery Capital to come here. Oh, and that all the raw materials are
close by and readilly available. And land is cheap. And etcetera.

Better than Bleak City's endless brick venear or warped wood plank.

Must be some reason as to why Melbourne is slowly shrinking yet Perth Metro
has 3 of the 5 fastest growing cities in Oz. And unlike Brissy/Gold coast,
the average age is getting younger. Interesting.
Also interesting that the Perth Metro Area is larger than Melbourne's. It's
great to live on the ocean (something Melbourne doesn't have), and shitloads
of parklands, and none of the slums. (Ok, we do have one slum - Brownly
Towers, but's scheduled to be demolished).
You lot have slums called "Collingwood" and "Essendon" :^P

As you know it's always been one of Melbourne's blue ribbon areas and
expensive , I was fortunate enough to buy mine well before the prices took
off all over Melbourne . The thought of buying something these days is scary
.

I was looking at a average to nice property last weekend in Pascoe Vale
South (average area) and on a busy street ....... I went there thinking I
had it in the bag as I had a budget of $480,000 (which I thought would be a
shoe in ) to spend . IT GOT PAST IN FOR $555,000 unbelievable ........ That
would have meant just to give the blood suckers in the Govt their taxes I
would have been up for about $35,000 ............ I really do pity anyone
starting out today looking for a first home in a half decent area
...............

I have.

That's because prices in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne are inflated. It's
what happens when auctioneers move in (and I should know, my dad was one
until his retirement). Melbourne's average prices increased by 0.1% last
year - hardly an investment market.

Tell me that the finance report by the ABC was wrong, which they obtained
direct from the BoS.
