I thibk in real terms, it is generally accepted that "wins" are the
real measure. As the saying goes, who remembers the second horse in
the Melbourne Cup (unless you backed it)
I would like to throw another view into the middle.
This seems to me to indicate the best and most consistent AFL clubs.
I obviously exclude the VFL because that is another competition
which is still in existence.
Club GF appearances Won
Adelaide 2 2
Brisbane 4 3
Carlton 3 1
Collingwood 3 2
Essendon 3 2
Geelong 6 2
North Melbourne 1 1
Port Adelaide 1 1
Sydney Swans 3 1
West Coast 5 3
Then of course there are those clubs which shall remain nameless - at
least as far as an entry on the premiership cup is concerned.:
Fremantle
Melbourne
Rishmond
St Kilda
Western BD
From this, one could say that:
1. Geelong is the most consistent and successful. 6 times in the GF
and 2 results; or,
2. WC is the most successful as it has won 3 from 5 times to bat (so
to speak) - the highest "number" of appearances in a GF to get 3 wins
(a 60% return); and then,
3. one could say Brisbane is the most successful ... 3 wins from 4
appearances - an 80% return.
4. Then again, Adelaide has a 2 from 2. 100% strike rate!
So do we judge success from:
a. the number GF appearances?
b. the number of GF wins?
c. the % wins to appearances?
d. something else?
While obviously I would like to say WC, perhaps BL are the team of the
AFL to date on the basis of win numbers and % return (and with Fev on
board, possibly a few more cups to come? ;-P )
Be interested in others thoughts / opinions on this.

Thanks Noddy
You are correct
Three times to bat for ONE win (1990)
(long time between drinks for Pies fans)
Glad someone is thinking ;-0

Maths is not your strong suit is it??? 3 out of 4 = 75% We do not give an
extra 5% for being there. Oh yeh Lies damn lies & wrong statistics.
Is it not funny that in life we put more effort into nitpicking than
into constructive matters?
75% or 80%, BL are still in fronmt - or are my maths again incorrect?
North Melbourne have won two gio, '96 and '99.
Did you get your figures from a Weeties packet?
It's silly to compare stats from pre AFL and post AFL
times.
For example, Collingwood won an AFL Premiership in
1990 when the AFL consisted of 11 original Victorian
clubs, WCE, a relocated South Melbourne and the
Brisbane Bears made up largely of rookie kids and
unwanted hacks from the 11 Victorian clubs.
Carlton won the VFL Premiership in 1987, leading a
competition that included the same three interstate
teams, WCE, Sydney and Brisbane, but this isn't
counted as an AFL Premiership as the competition
wasn't renamed until 1990.
It's plainly nonsense.
Interesting to see some people on this newsgroup spend their time
spotting the included (and obvious errors). However I was hoping that
some would address the conceptual aspects put forward. I thought there
was room for considered discussion. Wrong again ;( Oh well!

error?????
