SFWOE
Rob Riel notes, regarding the International Science Fiction Writers
of Earth Competition. " It'll the the event's 21st birthday this
year, and as always I'm keen to see Australia well represented.
The competition is open only to *unpublished* writers, defined as
those who have never received *money* for a *published* piece of
*prose fiction* -- articles & poetry don't count. Details are
available on the SFWoE Website, though entrants should be careful
to download the forms for Australasian residents, as it's much
cheaper. This year Picaro Press is helping to sponsor the
competition by adjusting the entry fee to compensate for the sad
state of the Australian dollar, and providing an Australian address
to avoid overseas postage costs. The top ten list is generally
published in _Locus_, _SF Chronicle_, and other genre magazines.
The winner will be offered publication either in _Altair_ (if it
survives) or on the SFWoE Website, though this is voluntary --
entrants are welcome to sell their stories any way they can *after*
submitting. The competition judge will probably be Edward Bryant,
and results will be available at the end of January 2002. Any
questions or comments should be directed to Picaro Press at
ja...@hunterlink.net.au.
IN ELECTRONS

IN PRINT
Alan Stewart notes " Sean McMullen had a short story "In
Love's Name" published in Babbling On (issue #22, July/August
2001)"

Penny Young of Thingamagiga Productions reports on "...our
new stage production of H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" which is
currently running at Cat and Fiddle Theatre at the Cat and Fiddle

of the novella, stars Mark Lee (Gallipoli), and runs Wed - Sat 8pm

ANDROMEDA SPACEWAYS IN-FLIGHT MAGAZINE.
""Andromeda" is a new Speculative Fiction magazine, to be published
bimonthly and widely distributed. We are looking for stories (to
10,000 words), poetry, line drawings and even non-fiction articles.
We will accept SF, Fantasy and Horror pieces, with a preference for
"fun" rather than grim-and-gritty. The first issue is scheduled for
launch 7th June 2002 at the Convergence SF Convention Payment: Up
to 3c/Word(Australian), with a $20 minimum per piece. (POP)E-mail

the above address."
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Kim Huett writes "as I left work this morning I was
surprised to hear part of an email from regular correspondent
Michael O'Brien being read out on the David Kilby & Chris Uhlmann
breakfast show. Since it was amusing errors made in messages left
on church bulletin boards I assume this to be the work of the
fannish Michael O'Brien." Kim also sent a copy of the Canberra
Sunday Times 12/8/2001, noting an article in which Australian,
Chinese and German robots did well in the world soccer robot cup.
ESSAYING IT
Chris Lawson notes "Web activist Reason has republished online an
essay I presented at Worldcon about life-extension technology
called "The Tithonus Option is Not an Option". Also on this site is
Damien Broderick's "The Last Mortal Generation", which inspired my
essay. Check out:
http://www.longevitymeme.org/ and head for the Articles page."
PERIPATETIC FANS
Damien Warman notes "FYI Juliette and I are now at 400 West 35th St
#106 Austin TX 78751 US and Jeff Harris is (at least for the rest
of the year) the contact person/"organiser" for Critical Mass.
Jeff's email address is jlha...@senet.com.au"
Mark Loney is also moving, but not as far "Vanessa and I have
finally made the plunge into home ownership and bought 'Hotel
Loney', a three storey townhouse in the newish suburb of
Palmerston. While Palmerston is a northern suburb of Canberra, it
is nowhere near the truly northern suburb of Palmerston in Darwin
in the Northern Territory (where Telstra first attempted to install
our telephone). Our address is now 44 Haystack Crescent, Palmerston
ACT 2913. The PO Box in Campbell will be quietly retired over the
next few months so all mail should go to our house."
CONVERGENCE RAFFLE
Rose Mitchell notes "ConVergence 2002 is holding a Raffle. For a
mere $1 a ticket you could win one of the following prizes: Full
membership to ConVergence 2002; Selection of trade paperback and
paperback books valued at over $100; 3 autographed photos valued at
over $100. ConVergence 2002 representatives will be selling raffle
tickets at SF&F events around Australia up to December and you can
also buy raffle tickets online. You can find a list of who these
people are, including our local agents, from our website.

CONVENTION NEWS
Note the cancellation of the September 30th one-day
Multiverse Event. Con Jose has sent out its PR 2 along with ConJose
Offline a sort of Clayton's PR. There seems to be a little
uncertainty over the dates for Conning Tour.
CON REPORTS
Reports from Claire McKenna, Zara Baxter, Ted Scribner &
Garry Dalrymple suggest that the traditional Good Time was had by
all at the Bankstown FreeCon. The Con evidently scored a mention in
the Sydney Morning Herald. Sounds like Sydney is where it's really
happening. (Now, if someone over there wants to take over the
running of a fortnightly newszine...)

OTHER STUFF
Astronomer and science fiction writer Fred Hoyle died on
August 20. His death was noted in, among other places, the
Melbourne Herald Sun. There was an obituary in The Age 28/8/2001
LETTERATURE
Judith Hanna writes "...severe recent shortage of visiting Ozzies
has deprived us of opportunities for exploring the Sights of London
under excuse of showing visitors around. Do we blame the exchange
rate? Or are all the people we know getting all moss-grown and
settled, just like us?"
Re the WFA nominations for Terry Dowling and Shaun Tan, Lucy Sussex
notes "...the other two Aussie nominations for the WFA were for
She's Fantastical, in the anthology section, and a story from it,
'Angel thing' by Petrina Smith, in the short story section. They
lost out to Gwyneth Jones and The Penguin Book Of Modern Fantasy by
Women (in which I had a story), but as far as I know they were the
first to get shortlisted."
Cheryl Morgan reports "I am spending rather too much time on the
bulletin board at Tad Williams' Shadowmarch web site
(http://www.shadowmarch.com). Today the talk turned to dangerous
animals, and some of the Aussie members and I explained the
mysteries of drop bears to the assembled multitude. After a few
seconds thought, Tad improvised the following poem, which I felt I
ought to share with you. It was written on the spur of the moment
and any failings in scansion are a result of haste. (to the tune of
"Inchworm")
Drop Bear, Drop Bear,
Lurking in the eucalypts,
Could it be so? -- some fool seppo
Has wandered underneath
Drop Bear, Drop Bear
Plunging through the canopy
Down toward that yank, you humbly thank
The Drop Bear God for teeth
