DOWLING & TAN ON WFA LIST

Jeremy Byrne notes "Blackwater Days has just been nominated for a
World Fantasy Award (Collection). One of the stories in it, "The
Saltimbanques" has also been nominated (in Short Story). This year's
nominations also include Shaun Tan for Artist. Only three Australian
works have been nominated in the past, including Jack Dann and
Janeen Webb's Dreaming Down-Under, which won for Anthology in the
1999 WFAs."

IN PRINT

Grant Watson notes " Kate Orman's new novel The Year Of Intelligent
Tigers is now available locally." Jonathan Strahan relays " Sean
McMullen reports, "Catherine McMullen (aged 12) has sold "Errold's
Journey" to the Valdemar Anthology V, edited by Mercedes Lackey and
Martine H. Greenberg (Tekno Books). This is her 6th professional
sale and first US sale."
Orb #2, the third issue, is now available. It features short fiction

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Poul Anderson's death was noted in The Sunday Age 5/8/2001
under the headline "Sci-fi man dead". I guess they at least noted
it. The genre gets a lot of coverage in this issue, with its Agenda
covering J.K. Rowling, Planet of the Apes and including Lucy
Sussex's reviews of Cecelia Dart Thornton's The Ill-Made Mute and
Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents.. Maria Papadeas, a Sydney
Trekkie and fan club organiser, gets a page and a half in Life Lines
in The Weekend Australian Magazine 4-5/8/2001. The Herald Sun
8/8/2001 also noted Poul Anderson's death, but their obit writer had
him married to the daughter of Greg Bear - a scenario worthy of one
of Anderson's own time travel stories. Damien Broderick reviews
Darwinizing Culture and The Road to Now in The Weekend Australian
Review 11-12/8/2001.

PERIPATETIC FANS

Jean Weber writes from somewhere in outback Queensland that
she and Eric Lindsay have been to Lake Eyre in South Australia "and
it was great! We took two flights over the lake, one from Marree
(over Lake Eyre South) and one from William Creek (over Lake Eyre
North). We saw quite different scenery, so we're really glad we did
both, and we managed to have two nice, non-windy days for the
flights. The days before, between, and after were windy, gusty and
overcast - not good flying weather at all. How we managed such good
luck, we don't know.
All the "tracks" we've been on so far have been more like (in the
words of several locals) "bloody highways". Dirt, yes, and rough in
a few places, but mostly in remarkably good shape. We seem to have
timed our visit for just after the road crews came through, but not
so long after that the road's been damaged again by the traffic."

BACK FROM THE DEAD

One time Melbourne fan Bob Toth notes that, having
rediscovered fandom via Barb dela Hunty's Fannish Pictures Website,
he's planning to be at ConVergence. Gosh, and Barb's site doesn't
even have some of the good photos of Perth Fandom in the 70s...

CONVENTION NEWS

Edwin Scribner notes "Conning Tour has so far failed to
attract a single starter, in the sense that nobody has sent me any
money. Is there some vital information that's missing from the web
page? It will have to be called off if we don't get sufficient
starters to cover costs (mainly the room at Ulladulla Bowling Club)
by the first week in October. All helpful suggestions welcome.

LETTERATURE

Dave Langford notes that The Millennium Philcon has
increased its rates "It's up to $180 now, with advance registration
closing on 19 August, and $200 at the door. " He also notes that
Diana Wynne Jones doesn't have a hyphen. I'm sure that, if fandom
banded to gether, we could get her one.

Dirk Strasser writes "I'm confused a little about your comment that
there's no clear statement about whether Aurealis has actually been
sold. We say in the press release that "Chimaera Publications will
continue to publish the magazine". I don't quite see where the
ambiguity is.
Keith's offer came out of left field, and we had to weigh it up
against the several offers that we had. The arrangement we've
worked out isn't something we anticipated as an option when we put
Aurealis up for sale. In the end, we wanted to make sure Aurealis
was in good hands. As you'd expect, the exact details are
confidential, but everyone associated with Aurealis is extremely
satisfied with the arrangement."

Jonathan Strahan kindly sent the complete World fantasy award
Shortlist.

Rose Mitchell laments " I have recently been appointed as the
Australian Agent for the UK in 2005 Worldcon Bid like I need to
undertake more fanac!
UK in 2005 is a bid to bring the Worldcon back to Europe,
specifically Glasgow, Scotland, in 2005 at the Scottish Exhibition
& Conference Centre. The bid proposes to hold the convention from
the 4th to the 8th of August, 2005, slightly earlier in the year
than are usual for the Worldcon. There are many advantages for doing
so, such as the overlap with the European school summer holidays
and the opportunity to visit the Edinburgh Festival and the
Military Tattoo. Site selection voting will happen at ConJose
(California, USA), the 2002 Worldcon.
Australians can support the bid by becoming pre-supporting members
either as a Pre-supporter $35 or Friend $165. Should the bid
prevail, a presupporting membership gets you a small discount when
you buy a full or supporting membership in the con itself. And if
you vote in the site selection in 2002, a Friend membership in the
bid will be automatically converted into a full attending
membership in the Worldcon. If you don't vote in 2002, the fee for
converting a Friend membership into a full membership will be
fairly close to what the voting fee at ConJos will be, typically USD
35-40. All pre-supporters are listed on our web site and in our
publications.
Extensive information about the UK in 2005 Worldcon bid can be found
at www.uk2005.org.uk The bid is running unopposed at the moment, so
becoming a Presupporter looks like a pretty good deal and a dead
cert for a cheapie membership to the Worldcon in 2005.
Get your presupporting membership from the Aussie Agent - Rose
Mitchell, 553 Victoria Street, Brunswick West 3055.
