IN PRINT

Jonathan Strahan notes "Melbourne writer Cecilia Dart-Thornton
recently sold a fantasy trilogy, The Bitterbynde, to Warner Books
in the US and to Pan Macmillan here in Australia. The first
volume, The Ill-Made Mute, will be published by Warner in May as a
hardcover and by Pan in June as a trade paperback."
The Slow Glass Books Catalogue 146 lists the following Australian
new releases: Gary Crew Gothic Hospital & The Kraken (Lothian);
Jack Dann Jubilee (Harper Collins); Traci Harding Tablet of
Destinies (Harper Collins);Felicity Pulman Shalott (Random House);
Cameron Rogers The Music of Razors (Penguin).
Lucy Sussex notes "You may know I've got a story 'Absolute
Uncertainty', in the April F&SF (which has all its punctuation).
I'm also being interviewed on phillipKdick.com re writing 'Kay &
Phil'."
Benjamin Payne reviews the following Australian stories from
Redsine #4 Rick Kennett "The Windows"; Dirk Flintheart "Death and
the Machine"; Derek Smith "gninn"; Geoffrey Maloney "The
Revelation Seeds". Trent Jamieson notes "I've a story in the
Feb/March Issue of Electric Wine called "Trail" "

IN ELECTRONS

Chuck McKenzie reports "...the electronic rights to my 1999 SF
comedy novel Worlds Apart have been bought by US e-publisher Abby
The Troll (http://www.thetroll.net/). The e-book of WA is
scheduled for release on May 1st this year (touch wood!). I'm even
happier to report that Abby are also intending to run with the
next three novels in the intended quartet, the paperback versions
of which were put 'on hold' due to glowing reviews (ie, poor
sales!).

Also, I've finally got my homepage up and running (though it's
still under construction); the address is:
home.connexus.net.au/~chuck

AntipodeanSF 37is available at www.antisf.com. It includes "Old
Habits Die" Chuck McKenzie; "To End All" Trent Jamieson; "February
30th" J.L. Cooper; "Breaking Point" Tony Horne and "The Second
Sixth Day" Derek Smith

DITMAR CORRECTION

Spinouts Bronze eds Paul Collins & Meredith Costain (Pearson) was
left off the originally released Ditmar nominations list in the
Best Collected Work category. The cover to Spinouts Bronze is also
part of Marc McBride's citation in the Best Artwork category.
The voting deadline has also appeared Thursday April 5th for
posted votes and 8:30am on Saturday April 14th for votes submitted
at Swancon 2001

AUREALIS AWARDS

The Aurealis Awards Convener's Panel announced the creation of a
new category for the 2001 Aurealis Awards the Children's Category.
The Convener's Panel is looking for people interested in serving
on the judging panels for any of the categories. Judges' reports
from the 2000 Aurealis Awards will be published in the next double
issue of Aurealis (#27/28) due August 2001

"The Convenors of the 2001 Aurealis Awards are currently choosing
Judging Panels for the 5 Divisions of this years Awards. (In
addition to Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Young Adult,
there will this year also be a Children's Division.) The Convenors
Award will, as usual, be at the discretion of the Convenors Panel.

Prospective Judges should be aware of the following: Judges will
be required to judge both the Best Novel and Best Short Story in
the Division to which they are appointed. A Judge can be appointed
to one or two different panels, but no more than two, and no Judge
can be on the same panel for more than two consecutive years. A
work written by a Judge is ineligible in any Division to which
they are appointed (This ineligibility applies only to writers of
works, not to editors or publishers of works). Judges need to take
an active role in seeking out eligible works; it is not enough to
simply wait for publishers to send out material.

Expressions of interest, requests for further information, and
general inquiries of any kind relating to judging should be
directed to Peter McNamara 2m...@adam.com.au or phone/fax 08
82673798 on or before March 28.

It is also important that those expressing an interest indicate
whether they are volunteering for two Panels or whether they are
only offering two alternative Panels. In the latter case,
preferences should be clearly indicated."

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Damien Broderick reviews Man, Beast and Zombie: What
Science Cannot Tell Us About Human Nature by Kenan Malik in the
Australian Review March 17-18. Lucy Sussex sneaks a genre review
into the Saturday Age Paperbacks column 24/3/2001 - Garth Nix's
Lirael, which also gets a mention in The Sunday Age the following
day. Many people, including Merv Binns and Robin Johnson noted
that Sean Williams and Shane Dix appeared on The Today Show, in
connection with their job of writing the next three Star Wars
books. What worries me is that that many fans watch the Today
Show!!!
Mark Loney mentioned the following "I have finally got around to
reading the Summer 2000 (Volume 50 No 4) issue of the
Telecommunications Journal of Australia ("What?" I can hear you
thinking.) It includes an interview with Peter Darling ("Of
course") that, while mainly about telecommunications issues,
manages to include a couple of fannish references.

Peter left Telstra last year and, according to TJA, is now heading
up a consulting company called Pondarosa Communications as well as
working for the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF)."

The interview included Peter's involvement with Aussiecon and
Aussiecon Two and his marriage to Elizabeth.

NON-PERIPATETIC FANS

David Russell notes that Les Robertson is back in prison at Langi
Kal Kal. He may be written to at Leslie Shane Robertson Langi Kal
Kal Locked Bag 4 P.O. Beaufort Vic 3373

FAN FUNDS

Sue Ann Barber notes "Thank you to all the people who
nominated themselves for NAFF - the National Australian Fan Fund -
designed to send fans across Australia to attend the national
science fiction convention. The field of nominees were all
deserving of the prize and it had taken longer to decide than we
original planned. The inaugural NAFF has been jointly won by Lucy
Zinkiewicz of NSW and Sean-Paul Smith of Victoria. These fans will
be travelling to Swancon in WA at Easter.

Next year's NAFF will send a fan to ConVergence in Victoria. This
means that fans from Victoria will be ineligible to enter. More
details in the next few months when the new NAFF race commences.
Previous nominees are welcome to reply if appropriate."

Irwin Hirsh discovered the following GUFF information from Eric

LETTERATURE

Andrew Murphy sent an EoC in which he noted "Speaking of
missing fans, Ruth and I were wondering if you had any idea of the
whereabouts of Paul Stevens and if you had any contact details, we
haven't heard from him in over 10 years and would love to give him
a call or an e-mail." Apart from knowing that Paul is somewhere in
Perth and has severed most of his ties with fandom I have no idea.
Anyone else?
