The first CSFG anthology, Nor of Human... edited by Geoffrey
Maloney and Illustrated by Les Petersen, Contributors: Michael
Barry; Chris Andrews; Peter Barrett; Matthew Farrer; Maxine
McArthur;Robbie Matthews; Carole Nomarhas; Les Petersen; Allan
Price; Paul Ryan; Antony Searle; Geoff Skellams; Krystle & Mark
Snitch; Alison Venugoban, was officially launched on 7 April by
Jack Dann at the Canberra Writers Centre. Details can be found at
http://www2.dynamite.com.au/robbiem/anthology.htm
Robbie Matthews adds "Nor of Human... was launched last night.
There were far more people there than I was expecting ...
probably about 50. Probably the biggest thrill was having to send
out for the box of books that I had left in the boot, that I had
brought along "just in case". I had been guessing no more that a
dozen sales, and planned accordingly. Jack Dann got up and made a
very nice speech about how "Australia was where the action is" in
the book industry, and how important this anthology is. Geoff
Maloney got up and made another nice speech and the night ended
generally warm and fuzzy, and a healthy way towards breaking even
on our first print run. Canberra is now on the map. (It's that
little blodge under Sydney and to the left of Wollongong...)"
Catriona Sparks notes the release of "Mitch?2: Tarts of the New
Millennium 108 pages of quality stories & illustrations which is
to be launched at Swancon. Splendid cover art by Shaun Tan,
internal art by Cat Sparks, stories from Sean Williams, Lyndall
Thomas, Robert Hood, Deborah Biancotti, Martin Livings, Grant
Watson, Danny Heap, Shay Telfer, Tess Williams, Robin Pen, Nick
Evans, Zara Baxter, Ian Mond, Russell B Farr, David Yeates & Cat
Sparks. And it only costs $7.50!!!"
DAWN OF THE DMFS
"crust" notes "On Saturday 7 April at 4.00pm there was a
screening of the film "Dawn of the DMFs". This is a locally made
sci-fi movie which took the producers ten years to complete.
The screening was at Kaleide Cinema RMIT 360 Swanston St Melbourne
and was a fund raiser for Food not Bombs, which is a group which
helps to re-distribute food to the needy, which would otherwise
have gone to waste."
IN ELECTRONS
Jonathan Strahan notes "I was over at the Redsine website, and
noticed that they've done a special issue on Geoffrey Maloney,
which can be found at: http://www.redsine.com/featured.html. It
includes a bio, interview, three reprint stories, and an original
(I think)."
BOOKSHOPS
Rose Mitchell reports "found this great second-hand
bookshop in Moonee Ponds with a huge range of SF&F - nearly a
full wall stacked to the ceiling- contains some real gems. It's
situated at Moonee Ponds Junction - bus and tram terminus. RMC
Stamps 639 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 PH: 03

LUCY TO JUDGE
Lucy Sussex notes "It's official - I will be one of the
judges for the Premiers' Awards (Victoria) in the non-fiction
category. You actually get paid for this particular gig..."
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Sue Ann Barber notes "they reprinted the article on
me/MSFC from the local Brunswick paper in the local Coburg paper
- same article, same picture."
Robert Hood reports "I'm pleased to say that a photo I took at
Nick Stathopoulos's Icarus exhibition made it into the April 2001
issue of Locus page 38."
Dennis Callegari made a brief appearance on the
soon-to-be-defunct television program Greed. He reckons he wasn't
greedy enough.
In The Australian Review, Terry Dowling looks at Sean McMullen's
The Miocene Arrow, along with some overseas stuff.
The Herald Sun 2/4/2001 featured a photograph of old-time
Melbourne fan Peter Kemp in full Scout Uniform. The accompanying
article makes no mention of his fan involvement.
Sophie Masson has an article entitled "Shakespeare and Me" in the
March issue of Quadrant.
FAN FUNDS
DUFF winners Naomi Fisher and Pat Molloy spent some time
in Melbourne, managing to get to the Nova Mob, Friday Night
Gathering and The MSFC, as well as a visit to Healesville
Wildlife Sanctuary, where they weren't bitten by a wombat.
PERIPATETIC FANS
Brian Forte reports "The Limberger-Forte clan have moved, from
the leafy eastern suburbs around Norwood to the equally leafy
suburbs just south of the square mile of Adelaide. We're closer
to the city centre (2 minutes in a car to Victoria Square, 15
minutes by foot), two flights of stairs up (with magnificent
views) and we don't have to look after a garden anymore. This
latter pleases me more than it should I suspect.

Karen Pender Gunn has changed her first name to KRin. She
is organising a Relay for Life team to walk at the Whitehorse
walk venue in November. This raises money for the Anti-Cancer
Council of Victoria. The cost is $10 per person and the idea is
that the team takes it in turn to walk, with the whole thing
running for 48 hours. If you are interested, contact her at
fia...@ozramp.net.au. KRin also notes that she is back in gainful
employ, working with the Anti-Cancer Council Library.
AGING FANDOM
Carey Handfield's 50th Birthday saw a number of elderly
Melbourne fans and ex-fans dusting off their Zimmer frames to
celebrate his birthday. The gathering was noted for the number of
Perth expatriates including Cindy Evans, Roy Ferguson, Craig &
Julia Hilton, and Julian Warner, along with the usual Melbourne
suspects, David & Sue Grigg, Rob Gerand, Lucy Sussex, Race
Matthews, Marc & Cath Ortlieb and Claudia Mangiamele. The younger
generation were represented the Ackroyds and the Ortlieb &
Handfield children.
MILLENNIUM FREECON
(A report by Rose Mitchell)
The Millennium Freecon, held recently at the Australian
Museum in Sydney, was a two-day event, organised by Sydney fan
Garry Dalrymple, aimed at those who wanting to attend
author-based SF cons. It also served to increase the profile of
new and emerging Sydney authors. This and two similar events
held in 2000, have helped revitalise Sydney's author-based
fandom.
Several fans interested in con running met for an
informal information sharing meeting, or a serious SMOFfing
session depending on your view point on the Friday evening before
Freecon opened. Notes from this meeting can be found at
http://members.optushome.com.au/aussff/WconDisc.html and a paper
on how Convergence 2002, the 2002 Natcon, got up and running and
this can be found at
http://members.optushome.com.au/aussff/Rosedoc.html which also
includes some background on future plans for Worldcons in
Australia. Garry also had given a great deal of thought to the
possibility of Sydney holding a Worldcon and his musings can be
found at "http://members.optushome.com.au/aussff/GarryD.html".
The meeting was quite productive, for nothing else than people
meeting each other face to face, sharing information and
experiences and bonding! Good-natured ribbing and parochial
interests of course abounded.
The program, devised by Chuck McKenzie, an ex-Melbourne
lad now residing in the harbour city, was well structured,
innovative and above all else interesting. The hour and a half
sessions, made up of two items per session, were interspersed
with tea breaks, giving people ample opportunities and time to
network and meet people. Attendees were encouraged to wear their
name badges in prominent places so that others could approach
them. This worked exceedingly well; I think I met and spoke to
nearly everyone who attended over the two days.
Highlights were the talk by Dr Bill Zealey from the
University of Wollongong and President of the Australian
Institute of Physics. His presentation focused on the
feasibility of mining asteroids and suitable planets and moons in
our solar system, juxtaposing SF with real economics and state of
the art engineering technologies. He postulated that mining in
near earth orbit is possible within the next fifty years.
Sue Batho led a lively discussion, with lots of audience
participation, on cult TV series and how to differentiate between
SF and Fantasy and neatly categorise your favourite TV show. An
integral part of the theory concerned frocks, and the important
role they play in the larger scheme of things. It aligned with my
own theory on judging TV shows or movies - what I refer to as the
'Frockability Test', whereby a show's artistic merit is in direct
inverse proportion to how good the frocks are: great frocks, crap
show.
David Bofinger led a discussion on the seminal works of
SF, which was pronounced 'semenial', and competently presided
over all the smutty jokes and puns, making sure that everybody
got a shot (er, is that another smutty pun?).
The Sunday session started off with some lively
role-playing and this was followed by readings from emerging
horror writers Robbie Matthews, Les Petersen and Alison
Venugoban, both from Canberra, and established author Rob Hood.
Venugoban read from her third novel, 'Androgyny', which she
explained had lots of 'naughty bits', piquing a lot of interest.
After group photos taken by Cat Sparks, last year's
Ditmar winning artist, on very low-tech equipment belonging to
Ted Scrivens, small press publishing in Australia was dissected
and analysed. The topic moved swiftly to the impact of the GST
on book publishing in Australia and was threatening to get bogged
down in accountant-speak when the moderator, Mr McKenzie, quickly
drew proceedings back onto an even keel. After a short break,
David Bofinger and Chuck McKenzie lead a panel on humour in SF&F.
Overseas publishers perceive that Australians don't like humour
in their genre material. This perception was quickly denounced
as the panelists and audience discussed comedy in SF&F books, TV
shows and movies and Chuck got to plug his humorous book, Worlds
Apart.
SF artists, Marco Nero (conceptual artist for Farscape),
Cat Sparks and Les Petersen (Cartoonist) joined by a gate-crasher
panel member whose name most of the audience missed, discussed
opportunities for the SF artist, both in Australia and overseas.
Nero warned the audience to watch out for unobtrusive graffiti on
Moya, in Peacekeeper language of course, advising 'for a good
time ring Zhaan' suggested by Virginia Hey, the actor who plays
Zotoh Zhaan (the Blue Chick).
Freecon was a very well run and well thought out
convention and congratulations are in order to the organisers.
Two more Freecons are planned later in 2001 and it would seem
that the Freecons, and to a lesser extent Aussiecon Three, also
have generated interest in running conventions in Canberra. A
minicon is planned for May in that city and details can be found
at http://members.optushome.com.au/aussff/csfcon.html
The fan-run convention scene is certainly picking up in
Australia, what with Freecon in March, Swancon at Easter, CSFcon
and Friends of Science Fiction in May and Multiverse in June,
altogether a full calendar over the next few months.
Postscript : Several mini auctions were held during both
days and $217 was raised in aid of DUFF.
SILLY SEASON
Someone has come up with the idea of getting lots of
people to enter their religion as Jedi in this year's Australian
Census. Come on people. Be sensible. I can just imagine twelve
blokes sitting around in a room saying things like "Let's say
there's this incredible Force in everything. We can call it the
Holy Ghost. And we'll need some sort of Darth Vader figure but
with a really good side to him. Give him a catchy name like Light
Sabre or Light Carrier - Latinize it up a bit...Lucifer should
do." Next thing you know you've got a world religion and people
killing on another because they can't agree that Carrie Fisher
was the "one other" mentioned in the prophesy.
