UPCOMING
Grant Watson notes "Kate Orman's "The Year Of Intelligent Tigers"
(BBC Books) is due out this month".
IN ELECTRONS
"Matt" sends the following rather cryptic note "Oz author
posted enovel @ www.angelfire.com/scifi/nanomen free online eNovel
for readers 16 years and over."
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Mathew Frank notes that Brisbane's Pulp Fiction sf bookshop was
contacted by Channel 10 regarding a segment on a lifestyle show.
Paul Kidd gets a two page spread in The Australian Magazine July
14-15. The story centres on Paul's script for an animated movie,
Petal Storm. Alan Stewart notes "MSFC member Catherine Curie is
featured in the 'Mentor' section of The Age Employment Guide on
Saturday 14 July." And apropos of nothing the Herald Sun had a
filler about 81 year-old Ray Bradbury 17/7/2001.
SOME OF YOUR SMEGGING BUSINESS?
Smeg Radio is looking for reporters who are willing to do
a 5 minute news segment once every month by phone (so you don't
have to be in Sydney) on the following topics: Charmed; Stargate
SG-1; Earth: Final Conflict; Farscape. Contact

FAN FUNDS
Eric Lindsay notes "GUFF is now an annual event. Paul
Kincaid, the UK administrator, has just opened nominations for a
fan from Britain or Europe to travel to the Australian and/or New
Zealand National SF Convention in June 2002." Contact Paul at 60
Bournemouth Road, Folkestone, Kent CT19 5AZ, UK
pa...@appomattox.demon.co.uk. Jean Weber adds . "Candidates will
need to post a 10 bond, provide a 100-word platform, and have
three European and two Australasian nominators. Australians and
New Zealanders are therefore encouraged to nominate their
favourite British or European fan.
Nominations are open until 30 September 2001. All e-mail
correspondence should be sent to Paul with a copy to Jean
je...@wrevenge.com.au. The race will be from the beginning of
October 2001 until the end of Easter 2002. Since the Australian
and New Zealand National Conventions are within a week of each
other in June 2002, the winner will have the option of attending
either or both. The next Australasia to Europe race will send an
Australian or New Zealand fan to the 2003 Eastercon in the UK".
Sue Ann Barber reports on NAFF "Welcome to the second ever NAFF
race. NAFF is the National Australian Fan Fund and is designed to
assist fans travelling across Australia to attend the National
Science Fiction Convention. NAFF provides funds to cover part of
the cost of airfare (or travelling expenses) and convention
membership. Fans residing in all states and territories except
Victoria are eligible to be nominated to be the recipient of next
year's NAFF.
To be on the ballot, each interested fan must be nominated by
three fans from their own state/territory and provide a bond of
$20. In addition, each nominated fan is required to provide a 100
(max.) word description indicating what they could bring to
interstate fans and a brief description of their fannish history.
It is expected that the winner will produce a report of their trip
and will engage in fund raising to support future NAFF races.
Please make all cheques payable to Sue Ann Barber and NOT to NAFF.
Voting will commence early in November 2001.
To be eligible for consideration for NAFF, your nomination must be
received by 1st October, 2001. Nominations may be received by
snail mail at PO Box 249, Pascoe Vale South, VIC, 3044 or handed
personally to either Sue Ann Barber or Grant Watson. Nominations
received after the deadline will not be considered. For further
information please contact Sue Ann Barber at acti...@hotmail.com.
PERIPATETIC FANS
Eric Lindsay notes "We leave in a week or so in our motorhome for
a leisurely trip through the middle of Queensland, and maybe as
far as Lake Eyre. We expect to be missing for a couple of months,
and have no idea whether we will manage to collect our email along
the way. On our Queensland Gulf trip we collected email once in a
month while visiting friends. If we get access in remote areas,
Jean may update her travel web site at
http://www.avalook.com.au/newsletr/index.htm so check there for
updates (or to see more about the previous trip)."
Sally Beasley, Roman Orszanski and Gina (Goddard?) all seemed to
find Melbourne the place to be last weekend.
