SFWoE
Rob Riel reports "Results just in for the 19th International
Science Fiction Writers of Earth Short Story Competition, and
once again Australia has placed highly. Congratulations to Nathan
Burrage, whose story, "Snowstorm", finished third. Nathan's
award, after currency conversion, amounts to $91. SFWoE has a
website at http://www.flash.net/~sfwoe for more information on
the contest and its history. The SFWoE competition has been
administered by Gil Reis in Texas, USA, since 1981. It is open
only to previously unpublished writers of SF/F. The 20th annual
competition is now accepting submissions. From this year onwards,
Australian entrants will be 'sponsored' by a grant from Picaro
Press to ensure that exchange rates, currency conversion costs,
and overseas postage don't disadvantage Down Under writers. For
entry forms and details, send an SSAE to SFWoE, c/- Picaro Press,
PO Box 853, Warners Bay, NSW, 2282. Or contact
ja...@hunterlink.net.au. Congratulations to Nathan, and to all
the Australian entrants. And good luck to everyone entering this
year's competition!"

FAN FUNDS
"Welcome to the inaugural NAFF race. NAFF is the National
Australian Fan Fund and is designed to assist fans travelling
across Australia to attend the National Science Fiction
Convention. NAFF provides funds to cover the cost of airfare (or
travelling expenses) and convention membership.
This year's Natcon will take place in Perth, Western Australia
over the Easter weekend. Fans residing in all states and
territories except Western Australia are eligible to be nominated
to be the recipient of this year's NAFF. Preference will be
given to those who have a) not attended a Natcon and/or b) have
not attended a convention in the state/territory of current
Natcon
Each nominated fan is required to provide a 200 (max.) word
description indicating what they could bring to interstate fans
and a brief description of their fannish history. It is expected
that the winner will produce a report of their trip and will
engage in fundraising to support future NAFF races.
As this is the very first NAFF, the final decision will be made
by the committee. The committee currently consists of Grant
Watson (Western Australia) and Sue Ann Barber (Victoria). Future
NAFF races may involve voting by the fan community.
To be eligible for consideration for NAFF, your nomination must
be received by 26th February 2001. Nominations may be received
by email to acti...@hotmail.com, by snail mail to PO Box 238,
Brunswick East, 3057 or handed personally to either Sue Ann
Barber or Grant Watson. Nominations received after the deadline
will not be considered." Sue Ann Barber
Victor Gonzalez, won TAFF and will be making the journey to
Paragon, the UK Eastercon this year.

ADDITIONS TO THE AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY & HORROR
NOVEL LIST FOR 2000
Jonathan Strahan notes "A quick correction to your
corrections. In Bullsheet #161 you write "Further additions come
from the Aurealis Awards Shortlist: The Deep Field James Bradley
(Sceptre)". You should be aware the The Deep Field was originally
published in May 1999 by Sceptre Books. It had a high profile at
the time, sold well, and was reviewed in The Coode St Review of
Science Fiction by Russell Blackford. Apparently, the 1999
Aurealis SF judges didn't see the book in time, and identified it
as a book they overlooked. The 2000 jury did look at the book,
and included it on the 2000 shortlist. I don't know enough about
the current eligibility rules for the award, but that's what
happened."
ADDITIONS TO THE INITIAL AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY &
HORROR SHORT STORY LIST FOR 2000
"The King with Three Daughters" Russell Blackford (Black Heart,
Ivory Bones Ellen Datlow/Terri Windling (ed)); "Beholder"
Stephen Dedman (Embraces: Dark Erotica); "Miranda" Stephen Dedman
(Spinouts Bronze: Spacebound); "Reveille" Stephen Dedman (Cthulhu
and the Coeds: Kids and Squids) "Ways of Honour" Stephen Dedman
(Altair 6/7); "What You Wish For" Stephen Dedman (Weird Tales
#319); "The Adelaide Effect" Catherine Gunson (Altair 6/7);
"Peace by Piece" Edwina Harvey (Redsine issue 1 August 2000);
"The Naga" Rob Parnell (Altair 6/7); "The Sculptor" & "The Mother
Anger" Tony Shillitoe (Altair 6/7); Almond Eyes Robert N
Stephenson (Altair 6/7);
Stephen Dedman also notes "'Sojourner' is ineligible; it was
first published in Westerly in 1997, even if no-one saw it."
OTHER STUFF
GORDON R. DICKSON
I sadly note the passing of Gordie Dickson. I never met
the man, but his reputation is amazing, a professional who
enjoyed the company of fans. He was guest of honour at Syncon '79
in Sydney. There were those who enjoyed his Hoka and Dorsai
novels. I liked The Dragon and the George.
ATOM WINS ROTSLER AWARD 2000
Mike Glyer reports "The late British fanartist ATom was named the
winner of the Rotsler Award for 2000 at Loscon 27 over
Thanksgiving weekend. ATom was the faanish nickname of Arthur
Thomson, a British fanartist who was the dominant cartoonist of
fandom in the late 50s and early 60s. He passed away in 1990, but
enjoyed a renaissance thanks to four collections of his cartoons
published by Ken Cheslin. (Regrettably, Cheslin also did not live
to see the honor bestowed, having died last year.)
The Rotsler Award: The award commemorates the late Bill Rotsler,
the prolific LA fanartist whose cartoons appeared in fanzines
worldwide. The winner receives a plaque, a $300 honorarium, and
is honored with an exhibit in the Loscon art show. The award is
given by the Southern California Institute for Fan Interests.
SCIFI plans to donate the honorarium to a fannish charity. The
winner for 2000 was selected by a panel of judges: Mike Glyer,
Dick Lynch and Geri Sullivan. Past winners are Steve Stiles
(1998) and Grant Canfield (1999).
Remembering ATom: In 1954 Thomson ended his first letter to
legendary Irish fan Walt Willis with a cartoon footnote. Willis's
encouragement inspired ATom to produce an avalanche of cartoons.
Over the next 7 years ATom's fanzine illos came to personify the
faanish spirit of the age. Willis called him "fandom's Art
Editor."
Most of ATom's early fanart was drawn with a steel stylus
directly on stencil. Fans of the day could not have afforded
electrostenciling.
The way ATom worked is a revelation to the rest of us now used to
receiving photocopied art or files over the Internet. John Berry
wrote: "I would send Arthur batches of wax stencils and attendant
brief story lines and within a couple of weeks a parcel of
carefully packed fully illustrated stencils were returned. I can
still recall the thrill of opening those parcels even though it
was over forty years ago."
Cartoonists are known by their stock images: in ATom's case,
bug-eyed aliens with blunderbuss ray-guns, pear-shaped
beanie-wearing fans, "curly monsters", trenchcoated agents of the
Goon Defective Agency, wrecked spaceships, and alien militarists
in uniforms so elaborate they make Michael Jackson's stage
costumes look like civilian mufti.
ATom's rich sense of humor expressed in a personal graphic style
married perfectly with the sophisticated, ironic tone of Irish
Fandom in the early 60's."
