THE AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION BULLSHEET #177 SEPTEMBER 14 2001

An ex-newszine once produced for the Australian National Science
Fiction Association by Marc Ortlieb, P.O. Box 215, Forest Hill,
Vict, 3131, AUSTRALIA (e-mail:mort...@vicnet.net.au).

ISSN 1445-4319 (for print version)
ISSN 1445-4327 (for online version)

NO BULLSHEET HONEST!

Welcome to my last issue of The Australian Science
Fiction Bullsheet. When I started this publication in January
1994, I promised myself that, when it stopped being fun, I'd
stop doing it. Sadly, recently the BS has become an obligation,
rather than a pleasure. If I may quote a limerick
"He said, with a yawn
Now the novelty's gawn
It's merely a pain in the arse."

The Bullsheet started life as a good two cent fanzine.
(That's what it cost me to print each sheet of the first twenty
four mimeographed issues.) It was an Internet fanzine from the
beginning too. I've enjoyed doing it, but I don't have Dave
Langford's staying power. It was nice to briefly overtake him in
number of issues produced. I'd like to thank all those people
who encouraged me over the span of the Bullsheet's existence,
particularly David L. Russell, Lucy Sussex, Yvonne Rousseau and
Alan Stewart, and my thanks as always to Justin Ackroyd, for
helping me to keep things in perspective. Sorry Justin, I never
did manage to put together an issue that was soft or absorbent,
and it never did tear at the perforations.

As for the title, it's up for grabs. If anyone feels
like taking it, go ahead. It's yours.

I will be maintaining my Australian SF Site on Vicnet,
http://www.vicnet.net.au/~sfoz/ including the Calendar, fiction
listings, and the Clubs and Conventions listings, but there
won't be a fortnightly newsletter. So if you're doing anything
scientifictional in Australia, please keep me informed.

IN ELECTRONS

An e-mailed newspiece from Kate Orman reports on various
things relating to her and Jonathan Blum's writing projects.
"Jon has a two-part article in Doctor Who Magazine #308 and
#309, titled "Where Have All The Monsters Gone?" Kate's story
"Cactus Land" (Realms of Fantasy, August 2000) got an "honorable
mention" in The Year's Best Science Fiction, edited by Gardner
Dozois. Kate's script "Hidden Face" is now in post-production at
Timebase, a UK-based fan video group. A short piece by Kate
about lactose intolerance appeared in Argus issue 12 (July
2001), a small, free publication available in cafes around
Canberra and Sydney.

Russell Blackford notes "Reason has now published my
essay "Live Long! Live Free!" (largely based on a much longer
piece called "Life Extension and its Enemies", published in
Quadrant magazine a couple of years ago). Some of you might like
to check out the site. It's a pretty neat piece of web design:

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Mark Loney notes " John Baxter had an article in the
Panorama section of The Canberra Times 25/8. It was a lengthy
review of the latest French sex scandal book - by a French woman
prominent in the arts who has written a biography about her
fairly extraordinary sex life." Lucy Sussex reviews Justin
D'Ath's Echidna Mania in The Sunday Age 9/9/2001. Tantoblin
mentions, regarding media coverage of Freecon "There was also a
mention & pictures in the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader
(local paper). I was almost tempted to come & have a look with
all that promotion..." Vanessa reports "The Canberra Sunday
Times 2/9/2001 has an article on Gayle Lovatt & Gaslight books
(amongst other things, major sponsor of CSF Con). Also reviews
of 4 SF books done by Colin Steele." "science fiction guru"
Damien Broderick gets an extended mention in the New Scientist's
Antipodes column 1/9/2001.

FFANZ CANDIDATE IS A CARD

Lucy Sussex reports "Little Ted, former teddy bear to
the Warner family children and FFANZ candidate, has a new role -
featured as part of a range of greeting cards developed by Dora
Levakis, a Melbourne artist."

CONVENTION NEWS

Ted Scribner notes, regarding Conning Tour: "I have had
131 hits on my Conning Tour page
http://members.optushome.com.au/aussff/ConTour.html but nary a
cheque for the deposit. If I haven't got at least 20 starters by
Tuesday 2 October I'll have to call it off. I haven't had any
queries either so, unless Vanessa has had some, then everyone
understands the position and has decided either not to go or to
wait for the last minute to pay. Well, the last minute is Friday
28 September."

The informal Melbourne Friday Night Mob seems to have
become very much a hit or miss affair, especially now that Myers
Cafeteria has stopped selling meals of an evening. If you're
looking for fans on a Friday night, the MSFC is a safer bet. I
suspect that there will, for the time being, be people at Myers
on ANZAPA collection and distribution nights but I'm not sure.

Steven Cooke notes that SFSA is planning a quiz night
for the last week of October probably on the 27th

Would you believe that's the second time I've got his? The first was a few

Well, thanks for your time and effort over the years Marc. I'm sure that
there are many Gafiated and Fafiated fans like myself who have used it as a
kind of voyeuristic window on the ins and outs of fandom and the local
fannish scene from the security of their PC's.

I hope there's someone crazy enough and ugly enough to step into your shoes.
Unfortunately, I only meet one of these criteria.

Stay well.
